Hypothetical Cochin Breeding Questions

You should not show an improper blue as "self blue" because it isn't. Blue does not beget all blue. Blue variety begets blue, black and splash. By definition that is NOT self blue. An improper blue is put in the layer pen and culled from any breeding. Lavender and "self blue" are the same thing. Blue variety refers to Andalusian blue which is a breed all the blue variety derived from.

Here is an Andalusian. It's perfect in both Pigeon blue tone and lacing. The previous Cochin is slate and note it's fluff is not laced. Technically every feather must be laced like the Andalusion below. Shows the range you have to play with to your personal preference. If two birds of equal body type at a show with either color and the Pigeon will win out based on color alone. Or it's up to the personal color preference of judge as even decrepencies in body type are up to the judge's preference. His/her preference may not adhere strictly to the standard.

I’m not saying you should, but self blue is a phenotype, not a genotype.
Yeah, Andalusians sure are perfect. Unfortunately, Cochins will never get there, unless you crossed them. True Andalusian blue is caused by ML but also Pg, which allows black pigment granules to be produced on the edges of the feathers while the oddly shaped blue pigment granules are produced on the web of the feather. Cochins only have ML, so they can only ever be slatey blue. But people can still strive for nice lacing, even though the contrast won’t be so extreme.
