Hello, I have always dreamed of owning chickens, and my city is now allowing us to keeping chickens in our backyard (5 max, no roosters).

I’ve been reading several posts on this site for advice. I am currently planning my coop and will begin building it shortly. I live in the Montreal area in Quebec, Canada and plan on completing the coop by the end of autumn and purchasing some chicks next spring.

In the meantime, I look forward to reading all your advice :)

Welcome welcome!
Make sure to build a predator proof coop. Don't use chicken wire, use welded wire or thick hardware cloth. Make sure all doors are secure. Also, DON'T forget to add ventilation to the coop. Ventilation is key in the winter just as much as in the summer.
What kind of chickens are you thinking of getting? I would make sure to get breeds that are acclimated for your region. I'm assuming it gets pretty cold up there, so any breed with small combs would be best.

I’m planning on getting Buff Orpington chickens.
I will be insulating the coop as I don’t plan on heating it. I will add ventilation on the upper walls to avoid drafts. There will be a roof on the chicken run (6 x 12) and I will be using 1/4 inch hardware cloth to keep out predators and rodents. An electrician will also install an electrical outlet next to the coop to enable us to plug a heated waterer in the winter.

Thanks for your advice and am looking forward to more of it!
