That being said.. SOME roosters have been known to search out good nests for the ladies to lay in and may even take a turn sitting on clutches. Not usually EE.. but perhaps you saw him coming out of the nest box and confused the behavior??
ETA: sometimes they even sing the egg song along with the ladies or when startled.
