Hi 👋🏻
I’m new here and we just got chicks a week and a half ago! They’re super cute, I have no idea what kind of chicks they are only that they lay brown eggs. I got them from the local feed store and she told me that they get left over brown egg layers from a hatchery after they fill orders. I picked out 2 yellow chicks, 2 yellow with gray, 1 all black and 1 black with cream on it. We love them! We got a super nice coop off Facebook marketplace for cheap and we’re going to clean it up before our girls need it and add our run. I’m hoping to get my run built this week so that my girls can go out in the run for a bit each day when I’m outside sitting in there with them. We had chickens when I was a teen but I don’t remember much about their care…. So I feel really new to this. My neighbors got chicks about 5 months ago so when 2 of ours got pasty butt I called her in a panic and she ran down to show me what to do and we haven’t had any more issues with that! We have them in a huge Rubbermaid tub (like you would use to hold pool supplies or outdoor supplies) with 2 wire shelves zip tied together over the top so they can’t fly out. I have put some grass with roots in there for them for the first time today (I did leaves the other day) and they have chick grit since I added something other than they’re food. I’m not sure what to make a dust bath out of for them? Just dirt from my yard? I want to do that because when I brought in the grass with the roots and dirt on it I caught one of my girls rolling in it, so they obviously like that! Anyway, any advice is welcome! We’re total newbies! We live on about 1/2 acre and we homestead what we can, we grow a lot of our own food, this year we will be tripling our garden space and canning and I bake bread, cook from scratch, so our own eggs was next on the list and it doesn’t hurt that we get the cutest chickens to get the eggs from! Next on our list is bees, to help pollinate our plants and also for the raw honey. And our dream is one day having about 10 acres and homesteading and being mostly self sufficient. So that’s us! So glad this forum exists, I have been coming and reading a ton of advice as questions have popped up with my chicks. If you have any ideas about our girls breeds please let me know :) Thank you!!

Oh our girls names are:
Dolores
Betty
Wanda
Elliott
PepperAnn
and Bugsy

Sounds like you have a LOT planned! Good luck to your homesteading adventure and welcome to BYC!! :frow

Yup, my dust bathes are just made of dirt. They will make their own, but I find that they like to make their little pits near trees. I wouldn't worry about a dust bathe now though. Once you move them out in a few more weeks, they will figure it out. Some people do like to add grass in their brooder, with some dirt, to help them build immunity toward the natural parasites found in the soil though.

Welcome to Backyard Chickens. Do you have coop ready ?
By a small building put some branches to climb and roost on ..
She mentioned she got one off of FB marketplace. Might be a good idea to measure the coop though. The MINIMUM guideline is 4 square feet per bird in the coop and 10 square feet in the run.

@pennyJo1960 & @cherrynberry I got a really good size coop of marketplace! I’ll see if I can get a picture to post… it should definitely be big enough for our 6 birds, I’m not planning on getting any more 😄 the pictures of it are on our trailer the night we got it, it’s moved to the back yard now and we will be hopefully building our run this week.
