I’m new here and I just got chicks!

Sounds like you have a LOT planned! Good luck to your homesteading adventure and welcome to BYC!! :frow

Yup, my dust bathes are just made of dirt. They will make their own, but I find that they like to make their little pits near trees. I wouldn't worry about a dust bathe now though. Once you move them out in a few more weeks, they will figure it out. Some people do like to add grass in their brooder, with some dirt, to help them build immunity toward the natural parasites found in the soil though.
Thanks!! 👋🏻

@pennyJo1960 & @cherrynberry I got a really good size coop of marketplace! I’ll see if I can get a picture to post… it should definitely be big enough for our 6 birds, I’m not planning on getting any more 😄 the pictures of it are on our trailer the night we got it, it’s moved to the back yard now and we will be hopefully building our run this week.
6 birds will need 24 square feet in the coop and 60 in the run. You'll be surprised how fast chicken math works. I thought I was getting a flock of maximum 10 birds. Yet here I am, going to be over 30 soon. I recommend measuring the coop. Might be a good idea to post about it, in this forum: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forums/coop-run-design-construction-maintenance.9/post-thread

Looks like it needs more ventilation too. Its definitely a nice coop!

Welcome to BYC and congratulations on your cute little flock! I love their names.
I agree that your coop looks like it needs more ventilation. Healthy flocks need 1 square foot of ventilation per chicken. Also, I'd build a covered, attached run, so that you can keep food and water there. That will give them more floor space in the coop for nasty weather days.
Good luck to you and your girls!

My quail are supremely spoiled and get fancy chinchilla sand.

Feels really nice to the touch and super easy to sift and reuse though.

Yes, you need more ventilation. You also should replace the chicken wire with 1/2" hardware cloth because the chicken wire is not predator proof.
