Silkies are all we raise/breed here. They are very friendly and beautiful. They do go broody a lot though, so you can either let them hatch more, or break them of being broody. The latter has become a labor of love for me nearly daily.

In order to not wind up with a lot of roosters, I know some hatcheries do sell them sexed (much more costly), otherwise, they come straight run and you'll have about half roosters. Whichever breed you decide on, just have a plan for what you'll do with extra roosters.

In my experience, Brahmas are a great family bird. They are docile, good layers, and can be very cuddly if handled from a young age. They're a very common breed, so they should be pretty easy to find at farms stores and such.
