We aren’t sure we live in New Jersey and we have to kids . What are the most friendly hens?Congratulations on your decision to keep chickens. It is a fun and satisfying way to live for many of us. What breeds are you thinking of? I talked to my grandmother and my wife's grandmother to find out what kind of chickens our families kept, and decided that way.
How friendly your chickens turn out has a lot to do with how you raise them. If you have a coop that you can get in and just sit and let them come up to you and interact with you, they will be MUCH more approachable. The difference between my first batch and my current batch is amazing. I still have some aloof chickens in my second batch but most will not only allow me to touch them, but pick them up and will fly up onto my lap when I am out sitting with them.We aren’t sure we live in New Jersey and we have to kids . All this being said, Orpingtons are supposed to be quite friendly. I find the Plymouth Barred Rocks to be too. That's a PBR highest up on the right side of my legs. She is super sweet.
We asked around for kid friendly winter hardy Hens and ended up with buff orpingtons, silver laced wyandottes, cochins and I believe they are welsummmers. The wyandottes and cochins have been the most consistantly friendly with the kids while the others seem to rotate who likes humans and who doesnt... ironically the orpintons which we were told were super friendly are our most skiddish around people, so I think it's more luck of the draw HahaWe aren’t sure we live in New Jersey and we have to kids .
