I’m not Mother Nature, but..... My journey hatching broody and bator chicks

Pics
I once had a 'wrong end' pip when I was moving eggs out of turner for lockdown on 'day 18'. Egg was stuck to turner, had to take turner apart to get that egg off with a combo of 'soaking' and picking. It hatched just fine tho, ended up being my persistent broody.

Also I meant to say, is it not amazing what we will do for these little animals?

Oh my stars and garters. Who even would have thought that would/could happen. I am amazed that everything turned out just fine.
That cracked me up!

I Know, Right??!!

It was crazy, I thought I heard peeping when moving the eggs....and thought WTH!
Then I found it...jaw dropping and slight panic.
Had to try and I had done assists before and had also taken a turner apart before.
No way I could let it soak long enough, plus you know drowning and chilling, so just started chipping away and got it off. Can't remember if it hatched on it's own or not, will have to delve deeper to see if I made notes on what I did.

So any more broody chicks hatched?

So, the short answer is YES. Three beautiful baby chicks and I can see the Welsummer coloration in all of them. Even the little yellow one has the Welsummer pattern.

Unfortunately, I was called away from being a chick momma to being a human momma yesterday.:barnie The nerve of some people! J/K

I went to the ER with my youngest son who was having several symptoms of a possible heart related problem, which was very scary, to say the least. He’s only 30. All turned out well in the end, well better than it could have, after an EKG, X-ray, & CT scan. Everything major was ruled out and he was left with a diagnosis of vertigo with what was probably a little dose of panic attack. All in all he feels much better just knowing that his heart looks good. :bow

Since I was away most of the evening and night I got up this morning to candle my bator eggs. I am fixing to go “slop” my chickens then come back and post those precious pictures I took of the babies yesterday. Oh, and the candling pics too. :love

Yikes, sorry to hear about your son, scary.....glad he's 'OK'.

You mean chipmunk stripes?
There's a better name for it but it eludes me at the moment.
Several other breeds have those.
Remind me... where did these eggs come from and do yo know that possible breeds?

Oh my goodness. I have been up in the coop, laying on my stomach under the poop board with my head in the chick cage just watching them interact with momma. So endearing. It reminded me of when I was about 10 and one of my granddaddy’s beagles had a mess of pups. He had put her in one side of the corn crib to have them and it was a mess in there, to put it mildly. I didn’t care. I would spend every afternoon after school and all day on the weekends in there with those pups from the time they were born. I like it when something today takes me back to when things were good and innocent. Just me and my animals (of some sort) all the time.

Back to my chicks now. Yes, they all have the characteristic chipmunk stripes of their father, a Welsummer. As for the mothers, two were from my EE and then two unknown brown eggs. I had said in an earlier post that I thought my SLW laid the darker egg that the little yellow one hatched from, but thinking back I believe both my Rocks (barred and white) lay a fairly medium brown egg.

The little yellow chick is the only one I know for sure came from a certain egg. The dead chick had a single comb and no puffy cheeks. Now here are my remaining three. Hopefully I will be able to figure this out.

Brown Chick #1
  • Darker of the two browns
  • Seems to have puffy cheeks
  • Appears to have something other than a single comb. Pea or rose?
  • Possible EE mother?
  • Hopefully an Olive Egger female :fl

Brown Chick #2
  • This one has a Marilyn Monroe beauty spot above right eye
  • Lighter of the two
  • Seems to have puffy cheeks
  • Not certain of comb
  • Possible EE mother?
  • Hopefully an Olive Egger female :fl

Yellow Chick
  • Has the chipmunk markings, only in shades of yellow and gold
  • Does not appear to have puffy cheeks
  • Single comb
  • Hatched from medium brown shell
  • Possible white rock mother?

Were the EE eggs blue/green? Could get some OE.
My first OE were Wellie sire and blue EE egg...tho half or more of those laid brown.
Can't remember exactly....it's a ADD and CRS day here

Yes, my EE lays a bluish/green egg. You can see the hint of green in it when placed next to my black Ameraucana and CCL, both of whose eggs are a blue blue.
I hear ya and raise you a CRS day. My ADD/CRS days are 24/7/365! :lau
