From other posts similar to this the crackling/crunching sound is respiratory. I would make sure they have clean fresh water deep enough for their heads to dip in. Also, make sure the hay stays fresh. Hay tends to get moldy fast especially when wet.
Maybe try some vetrx, but if it's past that, you might want to seek out a vet.
