My husband and I both were raised with fresh eggs both of our families had Barred Rocks, by the time we were teenagers our parents had moved to the city. We were married in 1960 and moved to our current home on 3 & 1/2 In acres in 1972, we got chickens right away. In those days you went to the feed store and bought whatever chicks were available. We had Rhode Island Reds while our children were young. We now have great-grandchildren and want them to see a little of country life and understand about fresh food. Because of that really aggressive Rhode Island Rooster, (our eldest daughter does not like chickens), and the ability to instantly research anything I went online. I had no idea how many breeds of chickens there are.

After a lot of research and finally deciding what my criteria was we brought home our first 3 Bielefelder chicks in 40 years yesterday. We have on order 3 Speckled Sussex, 2 Buff Orpingtons and 2 Jersey Giants.

i wish I had discovered BYC earlier, it would have saved me a lot of time; while reading articles about coops I looked up at the heading and saw FORUMS.

Our years without chickens were spent showing and breeding Great Danes. My husband says I’m in serious Dog Show withdrawal, hence the vegetable garden and chickens!
