im 50, male, married with children and from London UK.
This is my first ever time i’ve owned chickens, which we acquired as family pets for children, to provide us eggs, and help me produce superior compost for my garden flowers and organic vegetable growing.
How many chickens do you have right now?
2 roosters (one pita pinta asturiana and one black maran)
9 hens (2 plymouth rock, 2 black marans, 2 bluebells, 2 ginger Rhode Island, 1 white ixworth.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
i’ve enjoyed caring for them and watching them grow. it adds to the satisfying daily purpose of life. I love that they’ve accepted me into their flock without hesitation. I find watching how they behave hilarious. On one level, they are so naive and silly, and yet on another they are deadly serious and very complicated in their behaviours. I find their daily seriousness in free range food hunting fascinating. And the politics of their pecking order also very instructive.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
As i get older, it’s gardening and power lifting to keep fit, and eating what i grow to keep healthy!
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
As a new owner, i’m learning on the job, and have vast knowledge gaps. Everyone i ask google a question, im often referred to this forum, so thought it would be easier for me just to join!
