I’ve had two laying hens for over a week and they haven’t laid any eggs

Hey there!

I’m a brand new chicken owner. I bought two “laying hens” from the farm store and have had them for a week. They laid an egg the first day I got them, but nothing since then. They know where the roost and nesting boxes are - they laid their first egg in it.

Is this normal?

What are you feeding them and how much? Also, are they free ranging or in a secured run?
I’m feeding them layered feed, and they are eating grass and bugs. I’m making sure they have food all day. The weather has been weird lately. It’s stormed twice this week and a cold front came through two day’s ago. They are in a 10x10 secure run.

How much later feed are you feeding them?
So are they free ranging or in a secured run? If they're free ranging then they're probably nesting somewhere in the field in a hidden nest.

I’m not measuring how much layer feed I’m giving them, I’m just making sure their feeding container never is empty. They’re eating all day.

they are in a 10x10 secured run. I haven’t seen any eggs in the run anywhere.

Did they tell you what breeds they were and exactly how old they were?
I wonder if they're still settling in... hopefully someone with more knowledge can chime in.

With my hens when they slow down in laying or stop completely it's usually they need clean water or I'm not feeding them enough or they're molting (which only happens in winter), or if they're free ranging they hide their eggs.

They’re production reds. They said they were either ready to lay or within a week of laying. Hoping it’s just a matter of settling in

Hmm was their first egg really small? Maybe it is that. I know the first egg comes but it’s not always daily and then all of a sudden they begin laying daily.

Welcome To BYC!

Give them some time to settle in. They are in new surroundings, new people, possibly new feed, etc.
The laying of an egg the first day - essentially they already has an egg in the "pipeline".
It may be a waiting game for a little while.
