My mother who died about 11 years ago used to be a master fruitcake maker. If done right, it's great, but it's a talent that most folks don't have. It's quite expensive to make, too. My dad took over, making one every year, but his were never quite as good as mom's were.

I wish you would have seen my post about me making it.

I sent some to a few people on here that said they liked it.

I hate taste of it so I don't eat it but I love to make it and I sell some and give some to gifts to family and friends that like it for the holiday!

I will make one more batch I think this year.

I do soak the fruit in brandy/oj and the cheese cloth is slightly wet in brandy as well and rewet if needed it is best to sit in cool dark area for about 6 weeks. I have family that will eat it right out of the oven too though.

This year I have been using rum/brandy mixed that the liquor store gets in for the holidays.

I have a 2nd batch sitting here now that is 2-3 weeks old.

You can also use apple juice for the soaking of fruit and cheesecloth if you don't want or can't have the liquor.

I have some sitting here though and this batch is 2-3 weeks old and has nuts this time....also has coconut. I don't know about the sour fruit cause I don't eat it

but I get tons of compliments and great reviews.

We had a perpetual fruitcake in our family that got passed on from person to person for about 6 years. My father started it and after awhile received it BACK as a gift.
