Tonight I find myself in Valdosta Georgia, on my way from Canada to Sanibel. I have been on the 1 75 since Port Huron and I am amazed at the number of pieces of truck tires on the road. They are everywhere! Who the heck is supposed to be gathering these up? Surely to goodness they didn't all just fall off trucks in the last day or two. They are huge and a hazard! People are swerving all over the place to avoid hitting them but sometimes it can't be avoided and the darn things go flying once more across a lane or two.

I can't answer your question but I am sooo jealous you are on your way to Sanibel! I was just there a month ago - I need to go back!

Does Canada have a Department of transportation? I'm pretty sure it's the DOT that scrapes up the road pizzas, they are propable responsible for removing anything hazardous as well.

I don't know who is in charge of cleaning them up, but we call them Gators around here.

My daughter is doing a 6 week internship at C.R.O.W. a wildlife rehab centre. We are very anxious to see it....we just got running water at our centre last year and this place is so big, it has 2 full time vets!

I am sure that the road crews from the Ministry of Transport cleans them up in Canada. We do have some but not the numbers that I am seeing here. Even on the 401 around Toronto.....and that is waaaaayyyyy busier than these roads that I have been on.

What a cool internship! You are going to be very impressed. The J Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge will impress you to no end as well. The wildlife on Sanibel is amazing.

If you like hotdogs - better go to Schnappers Red Hots - amazing! For sea food - hit the Lazy Flamigo! You're going to love Sanibel. I've been going every year for about the last 15 years (twice if I can swing it!).

D.O.T. in the bigger citys an the state petrol an county S.O. covers the smaller countys. There can be 2 or 3 gators thrown a day for every mile of I 75 in Georgia. Some countys have a large force to clean them up but many countys just dont have the manpower to handle it.

Its almost unbelievable how much traffic travels threw Georgia a day.

I 59 an I 24 both go threw our county. Compared to I 75 both have almost no traffic. It still takes someone full time to keep them clear of gators.

They really are suppoes to pick them up and would get in big trouble is a cop saw them..
They get picked up though.. Who does it? I dont know.

Two more questions from what has been a fantastic drive. Those billboards advertising "spas" ( and there a lot of them!) ....I'm guessing that they are not somewhere I could stop and get a pedicure. They advertise truck parking....that's whats making me wonder.
Also, what's with all the firework stores? I have lived in two places in the states, St. Louis and Los Angeles and not once was I aware of any fireworks going on. Why so many in this area?
