I accidentally killed one of my hens today :(

I feel awful. We noticed one of our hens butts was looking red and she had a good amount of poo stuck to it. All of our chickens are fine being held except for her. We cornered her and picked her up to try and clip away and clean the area because it was obvious she had mites pretty bad back there which I feel terrible about too. Well my mom was holding her and we had her tipped forward but not completely upside down and we had no idea this was harmful to chickens. I noticed the hen (Ms. Pacaw) was making an odd noise and her eyes were closing and I told mom something wasn’t right so we quickly sprayed the area with the spray. Then she went limp. We tried everything chest compressions and we even gave her mouth to mouth. We feel terrible and we have been crying for hours because we love our chickens so much.
You said the vent was really red. Was it swollen at all? It’s possible that your chicken was actually suffering from a prolapsed vent. Its basically where the internal part of the vent protrudes out of the external vent. its a common egg production complication.

She didn’t seem to be prolapsed. She actually hadn’t laid us an egg in years which could have also been a problem but we had asked about that before and were told that some hens stop laying eggs sooner than others. I think she had more than one thing wrong for sure. :(

I’m so deeply sorry for your loss. I, too, had a bird die at my hand when I was trying to help her and it really gives you a horrible, frantic feeling followed by remorse. I’m so sorry. It sounds like she was very loved and had a great life.
Aw I am so sorry to hear that. And yes we were frantically trying to revive her but there was nothing we could have done. It’s just so sad still thinking about it. I just keep thinking like only if we hadn’t decided it was time for a clean that day.

She was definitely loved. I had just painted there sign with her name right in the middle.

So sorry for your loss. I'm with others who suggest she may have died of something else; I have never heard of a chicken dying simply from being tipped forward, though it's possible that position aggravated an underlying condition you would have no way of knowing about. Sometimes they die abruptly and we never know what killed them.
Thank you very much! I think she definitely had multiple problems. She would get so angry being held and would sit with her mouth open and breath very heavily. We think that plus being slightly tipped forward for a quite large hen could have caused her to choke. She wasn’t as loving as our other two that love to be held but she was still loved! ❤️

That’s interesting. I had the same thing happen to a hen that I had. She stopped laying eggs for a year or so then she suddenly died. Makes me wonder if she had some sort of growth in her ovaries or something. Guess I’ll never know. ☹️
