i ain't gonna work on maggot's farm no more...

I have had a redworm compost bin for about 5 years now and you really don't have to put any kind of meat source to attract the soldier fly larvae. BTW they are creepy nasty looking. I think I may have seen them on Fear Factor! Yuck!! Actually they really love bread but the earthworms don't so if you want to attract them, put a piece of bread in your compost can and in days they will be all over it.

All this is giving me the creepy crawlies.

I have a friend who's ducklings got hold of some maggots and died due to the poison build up in the gut
they didn't pass the maggots
so I tried never to have any hing rotting around my chickens
and I always felt the flies were to much to have around as to sickness for humans and fowl

some times thing that seem free really are not

Black Soldier Fly Larvae are not maggots! They are the larvae of the Black Soldier Fly they are not related in any way. The Black soldier fly will actually take over a bin and flies will not hang around to lay their own eggs. You might see a few but never their maggots.

I fed a week old chick a larvae with no ill effects. It ate it hole. I might have waited a few weeks to feed it to the chick but didn't think they could eat it, boy was I wrong. That little chick could eat them faster than any of the other chicks. We were very careful to not let the chicks get more than one at a time. At the time I didn't know how they even managed to swallow them but figured if they were outside with a hen they'd be eating lots of things.

Black Soldier Fly Larvae are very nutritious and beneficial to chickens.
