I am a new mother...of 12 chickens

I don't blame you for cooking for them. My rooster loved pancakes. He had a dance and a specific cluck he had specifically for pancakes. They're so lovable it's hard not to spoil them!

One time I was cooking scrambled eggs with the shells in it for my chickens and my husband said to me "oh hon that smells good are you cooking that for me" I said "no im cooking them for my chickens" and he came back and replied "I should of known"lol. He knows how much I love my babies so he puts up with me.

When we thought my boy was a girl, everyone was like, you're chicken is getting so big, what are you feeding it? It was only chick feed, a little scratch, but when I told them about the pancakes, I got the blankest looks like, you feed your chicken what? Now we know he was so much bigger than expected because she was a he, but I defended my pancake making.

Hello all!I found this site through a general google search about what I can feed chickens. I recently moved into the country and decided to get 4 chickens. Well...I came home with 12. How can you only get 4?? There are so many to choose from.

I have already read a lot of advise on raising these chickens so thanks for all your knowledge. I will admit I cooked for my chickens tonight. It is a sad situation here... I watch them way too much. They are so dang cute! I made them spaghetti noodles tonight..hysterical!! They are about 5 weeks old.

I got 2 of six different breeds. All females I hope!

Thanks for this site!
Welcome to BYC!

Keeping chickens is fun and can easily be confused with caring for human children.
But beware, what might be good food for a human is really not great for a chicken, especially when they are very young.
Get a good chick starter ration and keep any other 'treat' foods to a bare minimum.
Oh, and, if fed anything other than starter crumbles they need appropriate sized granite digestive grit or the 'treat' could make them ill.

Welcome to BackYard Chickens. I started my flock with 6 "OH SO Cute chicks" a straight run from Tractor Supply Co. Four cockerels and two hens (Not very good odds). I built my current flock of 9 from that stock, 1 rooster, 6 hens, 2 chicks less than 28 days old . Where did you get your 12 cuties from? My chickens are on a "seefood" diet, they eat whatever they see. So my challenge is to keep the bad stuff out of their sight i.e. apple seeds, citrus, candy and stuff like that. They have 7 acres to roam. I was out working in the yard and noticed one of my hens had caught a frog - Oh boy they loved that. I did a deep cleaning of the hen house a couple of weeks ago and ran across a family of field mice that set up residency in the hay. I let the field mice scurry off to a new home, about an hour later I saw that one of the hens caught a little mouse. They devoured that mouse. I have not cooked for my chickens but I do spend a fair amount of time preparing produce from our local grocer that is considered waste, bruised vegetables and fruits - A lot of it is still fit for humane consumption, I clean it, chunk it up and put in quart bags and pop it the freezer and dole it out on hot afternoons - they love the cool treat. I wish you the best Shelly, with your brood of 12.
