I am a wreck need an answer

I took it out again and I am really worried that it is dead. There is no movement...no sounds but the membrane seems still wet. I have had the humidity in the 70s. I think I will wait a bit and check it again. I could move its beak and there was no movement...

It is dead then. Go ahead and open it up. A chick with a will to live will move, peep and make noise if you touch it in the egg.

I opened up the egg...it was dead. The yolk was still the size of a quarter. It was still undeveloped in that the beak was still transparent. I feel so bad for the little silkie!

I had ordered these from a breeder and they were mailed to me. You know your chances of them developing at all are slim and we were so excited that we were going to have at least one that was white....and that was the only white one. That was the color we wanted to show... It was actually for my daughter to show in 4-H

We have a few left and 4 more due in 2 weeks. 2 of those are white!

Dont worry, just give it another try with a white one.
Just be ready to intervene as per the very good thread on intervening which is stickied.
Silkies are notorious for needing intervention, they dry out quicker once they start, ive read here somewhere.!
I now watch the nests, and reach under the mums to check if any are stuck as I figure that they get rolled around by the others and squashed by the mums when they are trying to hatch.
I have saved 5 this spring and they are really healthy.
I never used to intervene until I read about the silkies getting stuck more.

I just wanted to Thank all of you that helped me through the trials of intervention today. I have learned a lot with this little guy and I suppose that is what it was all about.

I have an partridge silkie getting ready to hatch. It has piped and is really rocking the egg. He/She is really a talker. That is so reasuring to hear those little peeps...

I will keep you up to date!

With an unabsorbed yolk, there was nothing you could do. If you had broke it out earlier, it's yolk still would have been out. You did your best. Good luck with the rest!

I never knew silkies were hard to hatch. But I've never tried them from after shipping.

just to add my 2 cents worth...i intervene now if the chick is moving less and making less noise after 4-5hours. Maybe thats too soon but I have yet to have a single chick die during my helping them hatch and I have done that to at least 1/2 dozen babies of different breeds. I simply take the egg out of the hatcher, lay it on a warm towel, and pick the shell away ENTIRELY with a toothpick. Takes about 2-3mins. Then I gently lift the outer tough white membrane away from the chicks beak where it has pipped and try and retract it as much as possible. The inner membrane which has the blood vessels on it I leave to the chick. Once I put the "egg" back in the hatcher the humidity makes sure that the membranes stay moist and supple and the chick without the rigid confines of the shell has NO problem getting out. Sometimes takes them a couple of hours still but as i said all i have done this to have survived so far.
