I am so furious!!!

My hours have been getting cut at work. I already only work between 25 and 32 hrs a week and have been all year.

Now they've reduced my hours to 20, 18 and 16 hours for the next 3 weeks. I'm so sick. And depressed. and upset. and sad.

How do I pay my bills with a $200 paycheck? You DON'T!

It should be illegal for companies to cut hours so sharply. This isn't fair! I have kids to feed! I have bills to pay! I'm so distressed and depressed.

And something that burns my butt even more is an employee who has only been with us for 3 months is getting 32 hours straight for the next 3 weeks, and they've taken mine away.

What did I do wrong?? I'm so depressed.

I don't think you did anything wrong, they may just be making sure the new employee can handle the work. Maybe mention that you are willing to work extra hours if they need you, and offer if anyone needs time off to take their hours. Good luck!

You've done nothing wrong---except if you have been working for this company a year at less then 40 hours/week, you should have been looking for other options/opportunities. It should be illegal, but that is what a lot of companies are doing now, if they only hire employees at <40 hrs/wk, then they don't have to pay benefits. My idiot sister-in-law did that for a couple years at grocery stores and other crappy companies and now has nothing to show for the time she was "spinning her wheels in place". This crap will stop when people refuse to work for these crappy companies.

have you asked why they're cutting your hours and keeping the other person on for more?
that's the only way to know... of course there's no guarantee that you'll get a straight answer, but you can ask. maybe there's something you can change, or maybe there isn't, but if you don't have some info to go on, it's tough to make things change.
looking for other work is probably the right answer, even though that's hard right now.
sorry you're having a tough go of it.

That is exactly what you need to ask at work, "What did I do wrong?" Tell them how you feel, that with the hours cut you can't make it and you would like to know why a new employee is getting more hours than you. I understand how you feel, I've been there too, and sometimes you have to walk up to them and say what you did here, Why?? A lot of companies think that if you don't say something then it's ok with you if your hours are cut, maybe you need more time at home, etc. Do it professionally, but do it; and if the answer is not something you want to hear then start looking for another job. You can't be legally fired for asking and they know it, and if they cut your hours more you can go to your local labor board, not Union, labor board, and tell them what happened, and that your hours were cut again and you feel it is retaliation for question the move. Take it into your own hands to find out why this is happening and it give you what you need to try and do something about it.

So does the company and that is why your hours are being reduced. Plus they might have hired other people and want to spread the wealth so to speak. I would just try to find another job somewhere. You might have done nothing wrong. They might be getting this new person 32 hours for 3 straight weeks to make sure they stay then start reducing hers and letting yours go back up. Like I said look for a new job and/or talk to your boss.

A lot of factors go into schedule writing. I did it for years.

Is the employee available all hours/days?
Does the employee have schedule requests?
Is the employee unavailable any days or days that are normally busy, like weekends?

You need to go ask your manager or schedule writer. Let them know you want hours and are willing to be called in if someone else calls out or they get busy.

Unfortunately, there are 'newcomers' to the USA who would jump at these jobs. Then the jobs become "work Americans don't want to do."

Yes, American workers want to do the jobs. . . just not at the low wages being offered for short hours.

Desirai, I understand your frustration at the seeming unfairness. . . and at this time of year when people expect to need a bit extra money. It shouldn't happen, but it does.

Do let the higher-ups know you are willing and available for more hours. Do what you can to make your services valuable to your company. While you do, keep looking for a better opportunity. Good luck! You are in my prayers.
