Hi Folks.
I am back on BYC. I had to let my flock go due to neighbors getting really unpleasant. We were previously from Empangeni in Zululand, South Africa but has moved (June 2014) to a farm in the Overberg area near the coastal holiday village Witsand of the Western Cape province of South Africa.
I can now keep my chickens at my hearts content with no one to complain. Shortly after arriving on the farm I ordered 15 day old Buff Orpington chicks and used an existing coop on the farm. All went well up to about 18 weeks when I lost all of them in a matter of two days to a predator (Scunk/ Muishond in Afrikaans)
I had to rebuild my coop from scratch making 100% sure that it is predator proof. I ordered 16 new Buff Orpington chicks and so far so good. Three died due to fighting and I ended up with 8 pullets and 6 roosters. I swapped 5 of the roosters from my neighbor for 5 pullets.
(He needed new blood for his huge flock) They are 20 weeks old and should be laying soon.
I enjoy them very much and it is so nice to be able to keep chickens without petty neighbors on my back any more. It is great to be back!!!
