My hen has Ascites and I am going to attempt to remove the peritonitis fluid. Tips? Hints? I know what I need to do, but I need to be more prepared to do it. When I put the needle in, how do I avoid sticking the organs? I know people have described how to do it, but can someone give an in depth step-by-step guide. I am sure it will help others as well....

K for supplies I have syringes and needles (the smallest I could find), latex disposable gloves, Iodine wound spray, antibiotics that you put in water, alcohol pads (for cleansing the needle site), Antibacterial soap for my hands and arms, Looking for cotton balls... and I am going to do it in the bathroom and will spray the area with some Lysol cleaner, and of course, get a hair band for my hair. How should I prepare the hen for this? What can I do to keep her still? Mom does not want to hold her because she is a pansy

How do I exactly drain it? What do I do with the injection site (only word I can think of) When I am done? Do I need to sterilize the syringe and needle before I do this?

Thanx lots your support is greatly appreciated

I've never done this to a chicken, but I have removed peritoneal fluid from mice back in my college lab days. You should be able to feel when the needle goes through the peritoneal sack, sort of like pushing a pin through a balloon. I can't give any advice about where exactly to make the stick, but hopefully if there's a lot of fluid in her abdomen, you really won't hit any organs.(?) I would use a sterile needle if possible. Sorry I don't have any other advice. Hopefully someone with experience will chime in before you get started. Good luck!

I got nothing! There is no fluid! She has the symptoms, she is lathargic, her tummy is swollen, she will stand with her butt almost touching the ground, her behind is squishy, I even probed around for an egg before I did anything and I did not feel one! What could possibly be wrong?! I would take her to the vet, but it is so expensive and I, myself, do not have any money. I understand why parents won't want to pay for it, $100 to fix one chicken when I could buy 100 chickens under $100. I don't know what to do....

I have her in the house and her tummy is so swollen, or sensitive, she will try to lay down and then get right back up. Think maybe I did not put the needle in right?

Just a thought, could it be an infection? I have heard of them getting an infection and they swell up like the way you described.
