That did not help at ALL!!!!!! The only thing that could help is that she withdrew some brownish stinky liquid, with particles from her abdomen, which was by the way $50.00! I could have gotten the stool sample results for an additional fee, but I only had $50.00
She withdrew 1cc of this liquid out of her. The vet said she did not know where it came from. She also said that she is really really skinny and I need make sure she eats a lot and force feed her If I have to. She said to keep her very warm also. The vet said the only way we can tell what it is, is by X-ray. I don't have that kind of money!!
It sounds like she offered your girl some relief by taking off some pressure, that sounds helpful. It sounds like you have something more complex going on and without an x-ray and lab work, you may not find out what's actually wrong. If you really want to find out what's wrong with her, I'd see about borrowing money. The vets can only offer so much advice without looking inside.
And if you're giving her antibiotics, you likely won't notice a difference in one day. Antibiotics are at least 5 days, sometimes 2/3x a day for up to 10 days. I'd keep trying the antibiotics as her sole source of water for 10-14 days. If it's peritonitis, there aren't a lot of options.
This site, http://www.thepoultrysite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=610, had good info. What your vet may have drained off could be partially digest yolks. The stinky smell could be the digestive acids. My sister had a hen who never laid for nearly 2 years and eventually died from peritonitis. I've never heard of it being resolved.
I'm sorry it looks grim. Tell the vet you'd like to make payments on an xray, at least you'll know.
How frustrating! I'm so sorry the trip to the vet didn't make for a happier, or at least more informative, outcome.
Does anyone here know of any BYC locals out there near the OP with good experience who could help? Sometimes
a second pair of hands and eyes can make a big difference. Anybody?
I wish I had more to offer but know that you and she are in our thoughts and prayers.
After the trip to the vet, and after she settled in, she started pooping quite a bit. Normal poo and she has been eating some more. Not much of a change. I think I am going to give PenG a try. It is weird, but she seems to be doing extra preening today...
