I work closely with my local zoo - as of right now I am hatching quail eggs and donateing them for the flight pens of the other zoo birds
Well today they called to tell me that someone has 10 young Pheasants that need a foster home ASAP !
here is what I was told :
this guy was outside in the feild near his home and saw the mommy Pheasant on her nest he did not get too close but it must have been close enough that momma ran away from her nest and so happens there is a road near the feild and momma ran into road and was hit and killed by a passing car
guy locates babies there are 12 - while trying to round them all up he kills 2 of them
he brings babies in the house puts them in a plastic tote gives them a light and game bird feed and water
he is not sure how old -- what kind -- he is also not sure any of the babies are eating or drinking
so now I am going to the zoo in the morning to bring these babies back here and see what I can do to help them
I know NOTHING about Pheasants !! I have raised chickens , ducks and quail but never Pheasants
I have a brooder set up with bedding, light, water dish, and all I have on hand right now is non medicated chick starter
I need to know as much as you can tell me !! I will post pics when I get them home
How do I make sure they are eating/drinking ? do I need to check them for mites or lice since these are wild raised babies? are there any risk to my own birds ? ( these babies will NOT be in the same room as my quail )
am I getting in to deep here by bringing these babies home ??
the goal is while they are here with me the zoo will be building a new Pheasant Flight run for them and once they are old enough will go to the zoo to live
I really have no clue what I have gotten myself into LOL
