There are not enough words to express the joy I felt when I saw the tiny black head pop out from under Mama's wing!

The pics are a little blurry, but Mama was not too happy about the photo shoot!

Maxine had gone broody a little more than a month ago and I was counting the days! I was starting to think none of the eggs were fertile. Then, Surprise! My first chick hatched out in my very own coop. I did notice once in a while when I could catch her out for a stretch that some of the other hens were laying in her nest. So, I can't really be sure whose egg it was that hatched. The last time I got a look under her, she had a clutch of about 14 eggs. So who knows there may be more on the way. I've seen my Black Australorp, one of the Barred Rocks and one of the Buff Orpingtons. I have two Rhode Island Red roos and one Buff Orpington roo. I can't wait to see what this little sweetheart grows up to look like!

I'm gonna try to get some better pics this afternoon. Sadly, though, I did find a broken egg with the remains of a chick. Maybe it wasn't strong enough to break out of the shell? Anyway, I'm still learning to take the bad along with the good!
