We have marked our yard for the coop and have picked the breeds we think we want. We are all so excited! I have read and read a lot of y'all post and I have learned so much from all of you. This site is amazing and I look forward to start raising our family's chickens.
One question: We have a 4yr old that does not understand the word, "easy". How resilient are baby chicks?
Thanks

Good luck on getting your chickens!

Greetings from Kansas, kcobbs, and :welcome! Pleased you joined us! Chicks are fairly resilient but probably not to a squeezing - might have to take a lot of patience and modeling. Good luck to you!

also chickens don't bounce when they fall - or get thrown, they splat! It's best to teach children that they cannot squeeze them, or throw them skyward and expect them to fly. Kids should sit on the floor and let chicks come to them. They are quick and unpredictable so easily dropped.

Welcome from SC! You will love the chickens & I think it is awesome to have them with children! My daughter has been around them since she was born, & now almost two, loves them! She feeds them, pets them, holds them, talks to them, the whe nine yards - it will just take him some time & your patience and guidence :) GOOD LUCK!

Thanks for all the great advice. This is why I love backyard chickens!

Welcome to BYC! Supervised handling is the way to go, just make sure the chicks aren't accessible when you aren't there to give instructions, good luck to you!
