(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

At Thanksgiving of 2021

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
1 Roo, and 6 hens

(3) What breeds do you have?
Ayam Cemani Rooster, 6 Silver Laced Wyandotte Hens

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
They are so peaceful to watch, LOVE the big fresh brown eggs, I love caring for them. Strange how quickly they become part of the family.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I am an Oil Painter and show at galleries. Gardening, and caring for my property and pond with my two dogs. I am a writer. Fellowshipping with my church family, friends, and the community.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

My husband of 24 years Greg and I are empty nesters. Our youngest of four is serving his last year in the USAF this year. I am retired, waiting for my husband to retire next year. I am an oil painter, a writer, and dabble in photography.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D

Every time I have a chicken question I type in my search bar and this site comes up first, and I have always found the answers very helpful! My rooster is starting to challenge me and before I ruin him, I thought I would join the community and see if he can be spared if I don't do all the wrong things at this crucial time.

Have an amazing day,

Vicky Ann

Welcome! Thanks for joining BYC. Would love to see pictures of your flock!
Thank you everyone! So kind of a welcome! Here are a few snapshots of them when they were new to us and just getting things set up last November. Gideon the handsome rooster (yes I wrote him a theme song, haha.) and his gals. There is Pecky and Ninny. They are the only two I can identify because Pecky is the fatty at the top of the order and she pecks everyone. Ninny is the lowest on the order and gets the most pecking and the least food. and the other four I call the backup singers. Look forward to seeing your flocks. - V Ann.

What a beautiful view! Thank you for your introduction, it's a pleasure to meet you :frow
Welcome to BYC!
Having chickens is so much fun. There is a lot to learn but it can be such a reward.
I am not an expert but, my tips on roosters is... whenever females are involved, and no matter how gentle you might have hand-raised him you are either blessed with a gentleman or, you got yourself a rooster. A rooster's job is to protect but, they can take this job so literal that even you are a threat to his girls. It can start off mild that eventually turns dangerous or, it can be flat out annoying because you can't let your guard down.

Maybe someone else has better advice :p It's fun though. I wish you the best of luck!
