Chapter 12

"Honey... What's that?" I ask.

"I don't know.... Hurry... We have to leave." He replies.

"What is it?!?!"

"I don't know, but we have to leave!"

We start running away, toward the coop. I stop and look back. Aww.... He's so cute! We need to find him a home.

"Matt!" I call after him. "It's just a squirrel."

He trots back over to me. "A squirrel, eh?"

I giggle.

"Oh, boy that is not the only thing!" Matt tells me.

"What? What?" I start to scurry to the coop.

He chuckles. "Ha ha."

"You jerk!" I laugh. "We have to get back to the coop anyways... I gotta tell more to Butter and Lacey. They're probably wondering where I am..."

He follows me. "Okay..." He sighed.

"Thanks for the walk, honey. It was really nice. We need to do that more often."

I ran into a tall hen and fell to the ground. "Hey Baldy!" A voice mutters.

Oh no. It's Sierra. Oh... What do I say? Oh my gosh.

"I said... HEY BALDY!"

"H... H... Hi Sierra..." I studder.

"Back off, Jerk Face!" Matt yells at Sierra.

She grumbles. "Oh.... Your here." She trots off laughing.

"See ya later, hun." Matt rubs his head against mine.

Sierra trots off. What a guy... Matt.... Your so sweet! I love you so much! I just don't get why you would want a girl like me. Sierra's right. I'm just an ugly mutt. Well... At least that's what Sierra calls me. Am I really a mutt? I don't even know. Sierra's just a stupid jerk. What a bully. I have a tear on my face. I... I... I... I..

"I'm just... No more than a stinkin' battery hen!!!" I cry. "Nobody cares about me! Or how I feel! It's all for their darn selves! I'm... I'm just for their amusement!" I burst into tears. "They use me! With Sierra, she's a Jerk Face... And Lacey - She's fine I guess. She just uses me! For amusement! And Butter - All she wants to do is bug me and listen to my stupid stories about my past. It's just... So hard! I can't do it anymore!" I run back into the woods.

I run and run as fast as I can. I run until I can't run anymore. I pass a million squirrels and trees, bushes and puddles. I stop. I hear something. A car. Yes... A car. Maybe two. Or three. Maybe ten! I peek out from behing the bushes. A wide open space! I'm free! I run out onto the gray ground. There is yellow striped running down the middle of it. Maybe I shouldn't go out there. But I go through the bushes and stand there, watching the cars and trucks pass by. One car stops. The human hop out and walks toward me cautiously. He puts his hands on my back and slides his fingers under my belly. He lifts me off the ground. SQUIRM MAIZIE! I start squirming and kicking and doing everything I can to get out of his hands. Act like your in an egg, Maizie! Remember how to do the 'Egg Method'? I pecked and kicked and squirmed. Nothing works. Not even the 'Egg Method'. He puts me in the car.
