Hello I am new to BYC. I have been roaming the forums for two weeks now, and I love it. There is some great info here from people with lots of experience. Very addicting all this chicken stuff.
A month ago my thoughts on chickens were near nonexistent. I say near because my wife had told me a few months ago (when we bought a 6 acre piece of land) that she wanted to own some chickens. I was thinking sure why not, buy some chicks and let them roam around the yard till they grow up and lay eggs ( In my head I was thinking she meant in a year or 2). A few weeks ago I visited a friend and he owned some chickens, I mentioned that we were looking to own some in the future. So he tells me "why wait, the best time to get chickens is now!! During Springtime."

We ended up getting 19 RSLs and 2 ducklings 2 weeks ago, after some BYC research I built our first brooder (4ft by 6ft) for our chicks. By then it was too late, I got addicted and we ordered us some Barred Rocks and some Cal White Leghorns. A week later wife came home with 29 BR and 26 Leghorns. Oh I didn't mention we now also own a pair of turkeys lol. This is crazy, and my wife is totally to blame for getting me addicted. Today we built or second brooder (again 4ft by 6ft) so our now 2 weeks old RSLs have more room. Next project is our coops with runs, so they can be ready for our chicks. Anyway I should stop now, before I get into what other breeds we are looking to get lol. Once again Hello everyone and thank you for all the great info.

hehehe, you sound like me when I started. I was going to go very slow. I knew I wanted large brown eggs, so looked at the chickens that laid those eggs and went to the grange and ordered eight chicks. Then I started reading more on this site and ordered some EE chicks. Then I ordered an incubator and eggs...then another set of eggs...and another set! I finally realized what chickens I wanted and stayed with those breeds and the coop is almost finished and I have 10 chicks in one brooder and three babies in another!

Oh yeah,

and to the home of chicken enablers!!!
