No custard recipe, but I am a 7-year BC survivor (got it at age 34) and going strong (knock on wood)... PLease tell her to hang in there, it's rough right now and chemo SUCKS but life after BC can be just wonderful!!!!!

i know this is OT but this petition has been going around our firm. thought ya'll could help. its in regards to getting insurance company's to stop sending women home immediately after breast cancer surgery.

I'll never forget the look in my patients eyes when I had to tell them they had to go home with the drains, new exercises and no breast. I remember begging the Doctors to keep these women in the hospital longer, only to hear that they would, but their hands were tied by the insurance companies.

So there I sat with my patient giving them the instructions they needed to take care of themselves, knowing full well they didn't grasp half of what I was saying, because the glazed, hopeless, frightened look spoke louder than the quiet 'Thank you' they muttered.

A mastectomy is when a woman's breast is removed in order to remove cancerous breast cells/tissue. If you know anyone who has had a mastectomy, you may know that there is a lot of discomfort and pain aft erwards. Insurance companies are trying to make mastectomies an outpatient procedure. Let's give women the chance to recover properly in the hospital for 2 days after surgery.

There's a bill called the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act which will require insurance companies to cover a minimum 48-hour hospital stay for patients undergoing a mastectomy. It's about eliminating the 'drive-through mastectomy' where women are
forced to go home just a few hours after surgery, against the wishes of their doctor, still groggy from anesthesia and sometimes with drainage tubes still attached.

Good post blue and not really off topic. I had already signed that as I got it in an e-mail. The next day my friend found out she had breast cancer.
I still can not believe that they can rightfully send a woman home after such a major surgery the next day. And it also is with other major surgeries to, open heart surgery to name one. It should not be allowed.

That's wonderful that you have a world renowned cancer center nearby. That's great news! Now, make sure that the oncologist she goes to is the best one. My sister didn't have a choice in her HMO, and the doctor messed up so badly that her second oncologist wrote him a 3 page report about the mistakes that were made and accurately predicted the outcome of her disease. The specialist I saw, when I told her my family history, asked the name of the doctor who had treated my sister. I hemmed and hawed and the specialist said, "Let me guess, was it Dr. *****?" And, she was right. She begged me, right then and there to sue this doctor because he had messed up several cases in addition to my sister's. My brother-in-law didn't want to pursue it, and this doctor is unfortunately still in practice. He is board certified, has chaired the oncology department, and lectures nationally but that doesn't mean that he knows what he's doing. Other experts in the field know of his issues and know he needs some retraining, but the general Jane Doe on the street doesn't. So, have her ask other physicians who they would send their loved ones to and take note of their reasons why. There are fabulous doctors out there and chances are she'll find one of them with a little research. Best of luck to her!

Thanks everyone. I just called her house and spoke with her best friend who came down to stay the week with her. Of course it is not good and she is in severe pain. They sent her home with Percoset. I do not know about anyone else but those do NOTHING for me. I have a very high tolerence to pain medication and I can't imagine havings my boobs cut off and coming home with glorified aspirin. I suppose they work for some and I hope they work for her. She was of course on a morphine drip while there and percoset are a far cry from that. It has just been 24 hrs since surgery!
From what her friend said she could have stayed another day but she opted to come home which I will never understand. Unfortunately the surgery is just the beginning of a very long physical and emotional journey.
And SeaChick thanks for your story, I know there are lots of women that beat it!

No recipes, but lots of hugs for what you're doing for your friend...
I had a cardiac ablation and I was all set to be discharged the same day, but I started bleeding internally once I stood up. so I got another day.
It's becoming drivethrough surgery. As much as I would have loved to be home, I think I would be more comfortable in the hospital(YeesH) than if I was home...especially after such a traumatic surgery.
I whole heartedly agree that Dana Farber is one of the best cancer places in the country.

I'm really so sorry to hear about your friend. Is a home nurse agency coming to see her? If not call the doctor and request that he order one, tell him about her pain. In an rn and really percocet can be strong, depends on your pain. It is a narcotic not glorifed aspirin.Of course everyones pain level is different and maybe her dose needs to be stronger there is an xtra strength percocet as well. We want her to be comfortable. She might need another drug like dilaudid or mscontin(form of morphine). In my experience as a nurse ms contin works best over a longer period of time with surgical patients with perhaps percocet or vicodin for breakthrough pain. (in between your doses of mscontin)
