Predators really suck!!!!--just delete if I can't say this

I went out to do the chicken chores that are on the other side of our ten acres....and I found out that something got into one pen last night and took out my Buff Cochins chicken and Khaki Campbell ducks....every single one of them was dead. This is why we have covered unclosed pens and runs.

I am so sad and mad, we have LOCKS on these pens because we were having human problems(strangers) and I always double check to see that they are locked.....but it looks like I didn't get it all the way locked yesterday...I just feel so bad....

My husband is a great listener and says that he understands, but I know that you all understand. The chicken thing has been something that I wanted to do and days like today are a set back but I know that I can do it again.

My dog---chocolate lab/hound mix was great with helping me....usually he will run around while I am doing the chores and then I will meet him back up at the house...today was different, he stayed with me just laying and watching and when I came out of the pen came up to me and wanted to be petted.

Sorry about your loss. Hopefully you can get another flock going.

It doesn't matter how small or how long you have an animal, it still hurts when it's gone.

What kind of locks or mechanism do you use to shut your birds in?

So sorry for your losses, I know it really hurts. If it's not too painful to start over, then that's what I suggest. I know I would run right out and get some fuzzy butts and ducklings. Again, so sorry...

I'm glad your dog was with you; they can be so perceptive when things go wrong. I hope you will be able to start over soon; there are many chicks and ducklings around this time of year that need people like you who will truly care for them. Best of luck.

Sorry to hear that,I have been lucky and haven't lost any of my girls yet*knock on wood* but I feel your pain.

Sounds like a life lesson and I'm sorry that you have to go through it...

Thanks everyone....I checked the incubator and...........

The circle of life is already happening....I have some buff cochins hatching right now. They are mine, not leaving, not being sold. A new generation is starting already.

I also was able to put the eggs in the incubator.....from the past few days

These chickens and my black cochins that are in a different pen are what I started with....they are special
