Any good deer rifle will do the job, Ive taken 2 bear so far and the first hunt i used a 300 savage, very small compared to the second gun used for the second bear which was a 7MM MAG. Both kills where clean with one shot..Both shots used to take these bear where behind the front shoulder..

LOVE the pet bear idea LOL

Okay, I've kept my quiet on this one but....I gotta add some things because 1. we are obviously lovers of animals on here or we wouldnt be on here, correct? (Hence BACKYARD CHICKENS..)

2. It IS baiting the bear, no matter what state you live in. If the first time you saw it in your trash, then it is your responsibility to remove the trash so the bear can look to its NATURAL FOOD SOURCES - i.e., berries and nuts is a bears main food staple - not meat and garbage. Its only there because its EASY FOOD - pick it up - the bear will go away in all probability. Ever have a bear eat your bird suet/bird seed? Put it away, the bear goes away. (I live in the mountains - I should know -we have "visitors" all the time here - and bird suet/feed is now gone just for that reason). I also have trash and chickens - bears dont bother either of them - know why? Because I pick up my trash and put it in containers - and my chickens..well they are well protected as they very well should be. Can a bear rip into the run/coop if he really wanted to? Well...yeah, but....a bear is not a meat eater by nature - it BECOMES a meat eater as a last resort when all other food is gone. Also - ripping into a coop is WAYYY too much work than a bear will want to do, they want easy food access, not have to work like crazy to get it, eventually they will give up and walk away. I'd be more concerend about raccoons than bears attacking your chickens in all honesty, its more of a probability. I dont know about you in PA - but here in VA - the oak and walnut trees have an overabundant amount of nuts on them this year, more than I've EVER seen in years past. I dont think a bear will starve....

3. A true hunter will never bait (yeah go ahead gimme crap about this comment, dont really care...its the truth). You can scent, you can rattle, you look for droppings, tracks, trails...or..you can SIT THERE (OMG..novel idea huh?!!) its called EXPERIENCE people! My husband has hunted since he was 7 years old and never once...NOT ONCE has he ever baited ANY ANIMAL he's killed - ever. No need if you are a real hunter - period.

To kill this bear after having it come onto your property KNOWING that its there because you CHOOSE to have it there -because its hungry due to your negligence of not picking up your garbage - is wrong, period. Its an animal and its trying to survive the best way it knows how, it sees easy food because you let it. I'm a firm believer in hunting - my daughter hunts, my son hunts (and he's 10!), but not this way - that animal doesnt deserve to die because of your ignorance. Tell hubby to go find another bear - in its natural habitat - and hunt it the right way if he's a hunter. This way is no different than spotlighting and poaching no matter HOW you look at it and I"m sure a Game Warden in any state will view it the exact same way (and many lawyers and judges too). Worth going to jail for??

Sorry...

(gets off soap box now..)

this is so uncanny...the other night, i was telling my husband how cool it would be to see a bear in the back yard..maybe not!
hopefully you can get rid of him somehow!

Of course you wouldnt...thats obvious. Shame you dont live next to me - 3 game wardens as neighbors..I'd report you.

To each their own - I just call it as I see them, dont have to like it no moreso than I like what you're doing to that bear *shrugs*...

onward and upward...to the chickens!!

Wow...My husband and I have been contemplating buying property to move to in the next 2 years and I have definitley crossed Pennsylvania (though I did live outside of Philly for 9yrs thank god I never saw a bear just a skunk or two lol) Maine, and West Virginia. I'm tooo chicken (no pun intended) to walk up on something like that. Good Luck with what ever way you handle the problem. I'm not a hunter but like I've said I've never walked up on a bear or had to deal with one before so I wont be judgemental.

I uderstand the *noble* keeping with the sport, actually hunting the animal instead of just harvesting by whatever means.

But, If you say shooting the problem bear is wrong, and shooting the bear that's out in the woods, minding his own business, doing his "bear" thing, never bothering humans, is right. Wouldn't that leave ya'll with all the problem bears? <blond tilt>

Terry,

No - because it wasnt a problem bear until the trash wasnt picked up...right? Riiiiiggghhht. Bears out in the woods - not being baited (sorry, its baiting if you dont pick it up and leave it there day after day and recognize, admit, and acknowledge that fact i.e, "I'm going to leave it there until...") are "just being bears" foraging - dong their "bear thing".

I respect hunters that hunt for the meat - I do not respect hunters that hunt for the prize/trophy - HOWEVER if that animal is baited in any way, shape or form - then all bets are off, you're not a hunter, you're just a sport hunter in it for the fun and thrill of the kill. You dont kill an animal unless you are going to eat it and in that same context, you certainly dont bait an animal to get to it. I never said shooting a bear was wrong - I said shooting THAT bear in that particular circumstance as Shellie posted is wrong, absolutely 100% - its baiting, its been baited to come back there and there are laws that protect the animal in this exact instance.

Look at it this way - would you shoot a human being for digging through your trash if it were hungry? No, you would tell them to go away and go elsewhere and throw your trash away...right? You cant just shoot the person if they keep coming back hanging out at your place waiting for you to throw out your trash because they know there will be food left in it right? There are laws protecting that person....that person was hungry however...so it had easy food, no money, but easy food nonetheless, right? I see it no difference - its a life and there are laws that protect both animals and humans. This is exactly why they are in place.

Its just how I - and many others - view things. I am not a PETA supporter LOL but I do think all animals have rights nonetheless and certainly no less rights than a human does at times.

ADDED: on a side note - apparently alot on here also think animals have rights - look at all the lawsuits against neighbors animals that have attacked chickens - or...what about chickens that have been attacked by other critters? You protect your chickens right? I see it no differently - I would protect the rights of that bear due to the fact that it doesnt know any better because its food source is PROVIDED by someone - its given to them with knowledge. So - if it were out in the woods foraging naturally, then thats different.

I'm all for animals...sorry - guess ya'll can shoot me then

Cant say you love animals and not love them all and stand up for every one of them in some instance.
