without trying to step in the middle of it here, I just wanted to add my 2 cents......
we have had bears break into the trash shed, as in RIP off boards to get to it. For most people, it is not feasable to put trash in the freezer, especially if they have a large family. Also, my friend had a bear go through her basement door, to get to the chicken food in the house. Now granted, it was a 1/2 glass door.....but none-the-less, it got in the house. It is now a rug........
We live in bear country.....if you leave feed out, they will come. if you have livestock, they will come. If you have a BBQ grill, they will come.........one chased me this fall, when I let my dog out to potty. Well, he is no longer a threat.
No matter what you do, if they are hungry, they will try to get the food. Don't feel bad if people get down on you, you are doing the best you can. Stay aware when you are outside, and do what you need to do.

I'm sorry you feel bashed, Shellie, but I wasn't bashing you. Jean asked me for an explanation, so I was trying to answer her. That's all.

I've heard of them denning under porches. Check that coal bin carefully.

it is a possibility, but I would put stuff in front of the door, so if he does look around down there, you will have fair warning. Just be aware, don't go mental thinking of all the ways the bear is going to get in. Chances are he wont, but you never know. Also, how big is the coal door? I have no idea what a coal door is, LOL. I mean, obviously coal and a door to get it in, but is is regular door size or is it a hatch? LOL, my Yankee "ignorance" is showing.

The entire state of Pa is bear territory. Just because you havent seen them doesnt mean they are not there. If I saw him again I would shoot. With the hard winter predicted it was also said that bear, fox, etc will be looking for extra food early. There have been reports in the past in the poconos of bears denning under porches, in garages and breaking into homes. Take him out a bear that big who isnt afraid of humans is a danger to everyone in the area.
