Mine are kept in a wooded area with several huge 50-100 year old trees. They actually use the smaller trees to escape and for cover by flying up into branches when spooked. I keep all branches on smaller trees pruned up around the fence line at around 6 feet, so they don't use low branches to hop over the fence.
They can dig up and destroy young saplings; with mature trees they mostly scratch around the base which aerates the soil and helps expose the root flares, which is actually healthy for a tree.
