I am tired of this hawk (juvenile)

Norma,,,,I love your 'jet sitting' idea,,,I'll have it ready in the morning,,,thank you,,,,,,,I'm going to try the pie pan idea too,,and the windsocks I can pick up at Wal-Mart on Saturday. Yeah,,,you guys will have no problem finding my house,,,,just look for the flashing pans and the water fountain shooting up from my backyard,,, oh I'm sure I'll be yellin too!!!

Scooter....juveniles do not fear you they are still way too stupid. He is learning and is not capable of deducting that the tasty squirrels are within his reach because he only sees chicken dinner.

Juvenile Redtails are comical. Look for it to move on in the next month or so when the migration starts...end of October early November.

Hawks are really excellent hunters but they see their world differently from other birds of prey.

ie: Eagles and so forth fly over a field and they see the tasty bunny, the field, the man on the tractor, the house, the family dog, the hay stack, the fence etc etc.

The Hawk on the other hand flies over the exact same field and he sees the tasty bunny....he circles, he dives and never sees the fence until the very last second and he never sees the dog, the house, the man and tractor.

That is why so many hawks are killed in fences running alongside a field or clipping car side mirrors and such.

Ok, nailed the pie pans to the fence post and hung to swirlly, streamer type wind socks in the oak tree late yesterday afternoon.
No hawk this morning and I just called home and SO said all has been quiet on the home front so far.

I have my fingers crossed it keeps him away.

I lost one of my Golden Phoenix to a hawk. Went outside just after it killed it but didn't get a bite.Anyways yesterday there were 10 hawks hovering over and I have to babysit the whole time.Is there something I can do legal?

only thing you can do is "passive", like the pie pan / CD / sparkly streamer kind of deterrent, or net coverings. Any kind of "harassment", i.e. squirting with water, air guns, pellet guns, bb guns, bottle rockets, etc. is prohibited by law. Sad, but true...

Check with the Kentucky wildlife people or raptor centers. In most states, if a hawk or hawks are hell-bent on dining on your poultry, and you have tried to no avail to stop it, you can get a permit issued that will allow you to erradicate said raptor(s).

My father used to put tin cans on the fence post. Hawks and other birds of prey didn't like standing on the cans. It is rather tacky looking, but it works. Also, the post seem to last longer if the rain and sun are kept off the end.

Now about the pecan tree, get rid of the squirrels and maybe the hawks will leave.

i got a Broad Winged Hawk hanging around my place doing the same thing. As a matter of fact he is so smart that when i leave the house in the car he will immediately post up on the run post and get ready to pounce. My wife has opened the window several times and screamed at him. Lately he hasn't been around but he is some kind of smart. I once saw a MARSH HAWK take an BLUE HERON it was amazing!! Never knew they could take a bird of that size, plus the HERON has quite a weapon (BEAK) you wouldn't think the hawks would even try but i have seen them take one down in one swoop--- AMAZING to me!! Try hanging some old scratched CD's up by your coop, that has seemed to work for me!! GOOD LUCK!!

Hawk Stew? I have some that you can add to it...FREE

You may have to check with you local laws, I know that you can't shoot Barn Owls, Eagles and Ospreys
This is an exerp from Gardening with guineas The owner of domestic or fowl may kill hawks or owls causing damage to domestic animals or fowl while such is occuring. Once they prey on a flock of domestic animals, they do not quit. If a bird of prey is killed the carcass needs to be disposed of no pary can be possessed.
Contact your local Game Warden about the laws in your area
