Hi all! My chicks are growing in leaps and bounds. I’m shocked at how huge they’re getting. I’m glad I handled them a lot early own. They’re pretty tame now and know to step up on my hand. Sometimes, I can’t even keep them off of it! I have some breed guesses on some and am starting to observe some behaviors that are making me start wondering about genders again. I got some close up pictures today. I’m hoping I can get some help guessing the unknown breeds and initial guesses on genders. I labeled the pictures in case that helps.

Chick #1 - This brown dude has been bigger than all the rest since the very beginning. They are SUPER chill. They never panic, mess with others, or get frazzled by others messing with it. They’re probably my favorite. I was thinking male since he’s SO tall and stands so straight, but he doesn’t have a dominant personality. I do not know his breed. I was thinking Cochin but I am open to other ideas! Is his color pattern named so that I can look up what he may look like as an adult? I am also wondering about his comb. He looks like nothing is happening?

Chick #2: This is the smallest chick by far. While they used to be the shyest, now they have really come out of their shell. They fly a lot and constantly get into things. I was told old English gamebird. Is that still what he looks like? Will he be solid black or some other pattern? I am completely at a loss for gender.

Chick #3: To be frank, this chick is an ass. He runs around chest bumping everyone, jumps on everyone, pecks everything (including me), and inserts himself in everyone’s business. I am guessing male? I am almost positive he’s a Cochin. Will be just be a orange/red color as an adult? Also, his leg feathers are no joke. They’re long and stiff; does that indicate anything?

Chick #4: This chick is a Cochin and is a fluff monster. I have always thought this was a hen because it has always grown up very short and squat. It constantly hides under things and is pretty skittish. It LOVES hunkering down and cuddling my hand. However, it’s got the only reddish comb out of everyone. That’s a sign of a male, right?

Chick #5: Here’s my silkie! I know they’re hard to guess gender on. Personality wise, it is VERY skittish and gets bumped around by others. It’s kind of a loner most days. His feathers are coming in SO slowly! Will he need to wait longer to move outside?

Chick #6: Here’s my frazzle! I think he’s a Cochin. He used to be an ass, but he’s settled down some. I am a little concerned about his feathers. He has several bare areas where nothing is growing. Is this normal? Do frazzles have the ability to fly with their funny feathers? I’ve noticed he doesn’t attempt to fly as much as the others.

Sorry for the million questions! I know it’s too hard to guess on some of these. The anticipation is just killing me!

Alright here's my guesses
1: Dark Brahma pullet
2: OEGB .... that comb has me right down the middle but I'm going to say pullet for now
3: Cochin. Again I'm pretty 50/50 on gender
4: White Cochin roo
5: White Silkie. I could never tell with mine until they either crowed or laid an egg. Lol
6: Frizzle Cochin roo. It's the kinda patchy feather growth making me believe roo for this one. Don't worry. It'll even out as he grows.

Keep us updated! I love seeing how these turn out

#1. Dark Brahma pullet
#2. Could either be a Black OEGB or bantam White Faced Black Spanish...gender to be determined.
#3. Red Cochin, gender to be determined.
#4. White Cochin cockerel
#5. White Silkie, gender to be determined.
#6. Black Frizzled Cochin, gender to be determined.

Adorable! :love

Thank you guys!! I appreciate y'all's help and guesses!

We just had a very unfortunate accident with one of the chicks. We have a system to hang their waterer because they were constantly kicking shavings in it. When my boyfriend took it out to refill it, he did not put it back correctly. It ended up falling and killing on of the chicks that had tried to crawl under it. I am devastated. Chick number 3 didn't have the best personality of the bunch, but I am torn up because it was such a horrible way to die and it was so preventable. In the beginning we lost two chicks almost right away because they were just too sick and weak. I understood those and was okay. However, I have grown so attached to all of these buggers and their different personalities now that they're older. I am very sad to have lost him because I really know him and because we are totally to blame.

I’m so sorry for your loss :hit

Ironically last night I posted a reply to a thread about how I accidentally killed a quail chick with a waterer. It was at least 10 years ago but I still remember the guilt. Neither of us intended for these things to happen though.

That’s so true. Everything is a learning experience. I just hate the price we and the birds have to pay for that education!
