LOL If I could only travel! between the kids and all my *farm* I don't stray to far from home! But I am enjoying this so much~ I wouldn't mind lending a hand if you were closer!

tiffanyg2 those "pesky" bugs are fungus gnats and they can drive you nuts, the love decaying matter - which probably explains why they buzz me while I am on the computer. Oh, computer screens attract them too - dunno why.
I read in the newspaper that scientists had proven that clothes dryer sheets repel adult fungus gnats. Don't know if that's true but I have been laying sheets of Bounce in my plant trays. I also spray all trays and shelves etc. with Bugstop before I add plants and saucers etc. I hybridize streptocarpus (cousins of african violets) and used to have a horrible problem with them- I mean they were in everyone's face, eyes and sometimes mouth (when talking). Honestly it seemed to be a losing battle to take back our basement family room aka plant room.

Since then I pasteurize peat moss in the oven before using. If I use those jiffy 7 pellets - I pour boiling water over them (let cool) before I add seeds or baby plants. I also hang those "yellow" sticky trap sheets. Not only are fungus gnats a horrible nuisance, they can spread disease and other insects as they visit your plants and lay eggs in the soil. Knock on wood, I hardly ever see one now.

Isolate new plants(from the garden center) like tomatoes, peppers, flowers etc. if it's too cold to set outside. The gnats kinda use them as a trojan horse to make it into the nice warm house.

PS I had tried the natural controls like "gnatrol" and neem oil over and over as instructed - never did a bit of good.

Haha that's what my daddy said to me~!! I think I made him proud of his little girl!! Thanks though seriously it is fun building this thing~ it's like fireworks going off in my head trying to sort out all my ideas is the hard part.

Yeah when we put our mind to it... anything is possible!

Call me old fashion I guess since I believe a woman should sit there and be pretty while her man does the grunt work, but I may just remove "chicken coop construction" from my list of things women should't do!!

Wow you have had them pesky bugars!! Yea I have this wine rack with all kinds of seedlings of my beautiful "passion vine" babies that I've been growing and quite a few other plants and I see them walking on the soil~ I planned on putting them all outside on a nice day trying to lose some of them hopefully. BUtg I will definately try some of your tricks~ now whats the jiffy 7 pellets? Everything I use is organic on the property so I usually resort to a veg oil/dish soap/water mixture for knat like nuissances. It works great on white flies in the yard. I've heard of the neem oil but hadn't tried it yet~ glad I didn't waste money there! Ugghh and the though of them spreading anything makes me gag

I will try some of these tips though!! Thanks Dear

I love my little plants and I refuse to let the bugs win~ I shall prevail as you did!! Haha

AHhhh so is your base about 2 feet off the ground? with you in that picture?

Yes...I think my base is 24 inches high. This is the only pic I had of me in to show perspective. I actually ended up putting a small step (2 pavers high) in front of the people door, so I could have gone a few inches shorter. But I like that I can stand right there at the people door and the opening is right there at my waist/hip, so I just lean in to do what's needed. So maybe measure to your waist and base it on that??? I'm thinking for your height, anything lower than 18 inches would result in you stooping (and maybe hitting your head on the top of the door frame when backing out from tending to the inside...???). I guess I also hate to see the space beneath the frame wasted because that's where my little guys hang out a lot. My big girls even hang out under there when I have the run door open for ranging times...

It's a great place to hang the feeder too because it keeps it dry when it rains.
