I bought a tropical island with an existing pineapple farm, new to chickens, unusual questions coming...

What a unique lifestyle!

Welcome to BYC. Will iguanas not eat chickens? How large are the iguanas? Maybe they should be kept on an entirely different pod.
A 12 x 12 area will hold about 10 small chickens or 6 larger ones. The problem with the smaller breeds, and some of the larger ones, is that they want to hatch eggs 2 to 3 times a year. Are you going to keep a rooster or just hens?
Since you are a vegetarian, if you allow your hens to hatch, you'll need to plan ahead as to what you'll do when cockerels hatch out.
Good luck!

In your environment I'd love to have a few of these just to watch free ranging. They are native to Brazil and would be a good fit for your climate. They are not for meat or eggs but more on the order of a collector's breed. You may have to have hatching eggs shipped in. I don't know how you would get a start with them. I have a rooster that is half Indo Gigante that I pickup and carry around some. He even comes in a few times a month to sit in my lap before going to his roost. They are gentle with people and just are a sight to behold with the rooster standing at 3' plus tall. Our best source of them here in the states is Greenfire Farms. They are the importer for us from Brazil.
