I wanted Silver Laced Wyandottes and found some in a neighboring town feed store. A friend's son lived close by and he bought some and brought the chicks to us. I was so excited, but as they grow, they are the UGLIEST SLW's I have ever seen. Or not.

Maybe they are beautiful SOMETHING ELSE. But what?? I know my BYC friends can help me out on this one--please!!

The breast feathers are black edged in white. Definately NOT a SLW!!

If they are SLW's, then they are worse than VERY bad hatchery quality (make that UN-quality ) they are SLW rejects.

Yes, indeed they really are silver laced wyandottes. They are unattractive, but this is the age where all adolecents are unattractive anyway. They will look a bit better once they're adults.

Very true. They are SLW and they will look very different as adults. And you do have a cockerel.

I understand that adolescent chickens age some gawky looking birds, but the feathers are reverse from what a SLW feather color is supposed to be. It is supposed to be white edged with black, not black with a white tip. I am trying to wrap my teeny-weeny brain around the feather color changing for the better and a decent SLW appearing.

Thank ya'll so much for helping. And a cockrell-they were supposed to be all pullets too. sigh. I can send him to freezer camp and he will make nice dumplings!

Anybody else? Are they REALLY SLW?? Maybe some kind of barred colored chicken?

Mutters to herself........goes back in utility room and looks at ugly chicks...........

I agree with the rest-they are SLW-just not breeding quality. They are young and will change alot-so they should get somewhat better. And, you do have a roo in there.

What kind of combs do they have? SLW will have a rose comb. If the roos comb is straight you may have speckled sussex... still poor quality.
