I bought SLW, but WHAT did I get?

Out of 7 chicks, 4 appear to have a rose comb, 3 have little points sticking up. I wouldn't mind if they were Speckled Sussex, they are pretty birds too, even if poor quality. I am not a breeder, live in town and don't keep a rooster, but since I am limited to what I can have, I had my heart set on SLW. I am disappointed in these birds. I will continue to play the waiting game and just have to wait and see. Thanks for all the replies and help.

Well you can sell them all and order from a hatchery with good quality birds if you wanted too.

Oh and no i don't see an y SS in there at all. All the wrong color.

They look absolutely nothing like a speckled Sussex and they aren't looking SLW either. The coloring looks mottled. I suspect they are mixes which would explain inconsistent comb type and off color.

Yeah, I looked up Sussex and they are a beautiful mahagony color, NOT like my chicks. I am beginning to suspect mutts. Ok, now we can have a name-the-mutt contest!

I'll be posting pics in the coming weeks.................... More than likely, I'll butcher the roos and see if the pullets are good layers. An egg is an egg is an egg. Once you crack it open, which chicken's butt it came from is a moot point. I might as well keep a good sense of humor about this.........

Hmmmm..................Anconas huh?? ....................... looks thoughtful and googles Anconas.............

Deerling, mine look a lot like yours.

I have noticed that you may as well not read the ID cards that the feed stores put up for chicks. They aren't right...Lol. They had a mix of leghorns and either barred rocks or australorps in a bin marked jumbo cornish last time I went. Lol. If you have a specific breed in mind you have to find out what the chicks look like and then hunt from there...If not you are more than likely going to be surprised by what you actually got versus what you thought you got.

Heck I went to the closest TSC to my house and bought 5 BO and 10 Cornish X...The next day I went to the next TSC over and got 5 leghorns, 2 red sexlinks, and 2 mallard ducks...in a week I was going to separate out the meaties because they had gotten so much larger than the other chicks in the brooder, and I started grabbing out all the huge birds...and there were only 9...so then I started counting the leghorns, and yep...6. So even though the 1st TSC didn't even have any bins marked leghorns, they had leghorns in with the Cornish X...I can understand if you only have a few leghorns and a few black Jersey Giants mixing the bins, it's easy to tell the difference, but who puts day old leghorns in the same bin as day old cornish X? They look the same at that point, but in a week some will get huge, and some will stay normal chicken sized...Lol. Why mix breeds you cant tell apart?
