AND .... one of the chickens laid her 1st egg during my class lesson on the life cylce of a chicken.

I am a student teacher , for my 1st lesson on science i brought in a baby chick , this concluded life cycle of a chicken when i brought in the hen!
It was such a fun lesson, the kids were so interested. They asked some very interesting questions.
"What is the red thing on its head?"
"Does a rooster lay the boy eggs"
"My uncles hen lays 4 eggs a day"
"Are you going to kill them ?"
"How can the chick breathe in the egg"
"How does the chick stay warm when it is out"

Also .. one of the chickend started to sing and one of the five year olds said .. "IT'S BARKING!!!"

For child protection and other legal reasons i can't post pics of the kids.. but i can post pics of the chicken and ME

I volunteer in my son's kindergarten class, and his teacher asked me to bring in a chicken the week before Easter. I hadn't really thought much about what we would discuss--life cycle is perfect! I actually considered buying a few chicks just to take in, but I resisted them. It should be a lot of fun--kids are silly (and very smart)!!

That is sooo neat. That will be one of the few things those kids will talk about for the rest of their lives and pass it on to their kids. You just don't see things like that in schools very often. Kudos to you IrishBoy!

First, THANK YOU for going into teaching! I know it's not the most glamorous profession in the world, or the most lucrative, but it is definitely one of the most important! A good teacher can make a huge difference in a child's life.

Second, way-to-go incorporating your chickens into your lesson plan, and

Third, a special "BRAVA" to your hen for laying her egg right on cue!

Do you know if your son's class teacher has a Interactive White board. I was able to show pictures of the eggs during candling. Also i had a range of pictures of different breeds.. Polish, Silkie, Buff Sussex. the kids laughed at some of the unusual types of birds. They also were surpised that hens lay GREEN eggs .. even the other teachers said "only ducks lay green eggs!"

Read this to my wife and kids. As a 7th grade Literacy teacher, she wondered if the class was a junior high, then we read about the five year olds. So funny!

I am a 4H leader. Last week we started our new 4H poultry project club. Lots of fun working with children.

This morning I was trying to explain how my five year old ate worms for breakfast. So funny as I explained that the mother hen feeds her chicks all sorts of stuff, like worms. You are what you eat and since a chicken eats worms then their...... At that point my five year old looked down at an empty plate of breakfast sausages and fried eggs. She interupted me with UOOOOO, I ate worms! I did not actually say her eggs or any eggs were worms, she just put it together! Five year olds can be so much fun! Of course, then my older children told her she was also eating a dead pig! My avatar is of my five year old.

Aww i enjoy working with the kids because they are so open to discovering new things! Last week i taught the primary 5,6 & 7 which would be 9-11 year olds but for this lesson i ended up teachig it to ALL the children because the principle loved the concept !
