Heres the latest,

Another egg is trying to hatch under Pancake right now!
wee.gif

I took a peek inside and it looks like it has blond feathers. I hope this little one makes it. I have the nest box closed off and Daisy Mae STILL Managed to get over the chicken wire!
he.gif

Did a little more reinforcing so now it should be good. I did not want to move her out of the favorite nesting spot because of all the other drama going on. Those girls have plenty more nest boxes to use. If I remember right they werent even using that box before Pancake chose it to go broody in. That is probaly why I was not too worried they would disturb the hatch. NOW everyone wants in there

Stay tuned.....

Ok, the chick in the front was hatched out of a standard size chicken egg. The one in the back is a banty egg. So is the one in the front a standard size chicken? The one in the back is banty mom and dad. The one in front would be standard hen and banty dad.
I am so confused, do they count as one or half?

@MistyMountain it is good to hear from you and you two should feel really proud of your accomplisments. It is hard hard work! What are your black and white 9 week olds? They sure are pretty!

I have a new favorite, her name is Daphne and she is a Pita Pinta. She is underfoot friendly and as curious and cute as she can be. There are two breeders close by and I for sure will be getting more but not until next year.
TG, they are Super Duper Mutts! SLW Willie Roo over EE, none of which are similar, at all. Brownie, Cleo, and Sandy's eggs. I left out Darth Vader's eggs because they are not a good shape (very oblong) and have super hard shells. I didn't want to set myself up for failure on that one, and didn't want to see that passed down either. The two white ones have white leghorn mommas. I really wish I could tell for sure that they are pullets and sell them as such. I'd be lucky to get a couple dollars out of the roos, but a bit more for pullets. I definitely can not keep them all. Still interested in stepping into heritage NH or German NH next spring!

Loooove Daphne for a name. I have a Velma in that group of youngsters, might need to borrow Daphne from you so I can have two from the gang!

Japanese Black Tailed Buff Bantam Hen
Ooooo! I like! Bantams don't work so well for us here. I found out fast that the little hamburgs, though not bantam, are just the right size for the hawks. I wonder if a LF version could be made… hmmm. I just like colors
big_smile.png

Arghh!!!!!!! I wish BYC would let me curse!!
I feel like the worst human in the world right now. I was trying to remove Lu's brace with my tiny scissors, and I snipped off the tip of her tiny rear toe. What is wrong with me? Poor little bubby!! I want to give up! It was bleeding too much for liquid bandage, but I taped it up with the butterfly strips and that seemed to work for now. She seemed to be walking better, so no more braces from me, just bandages. And actually, both Lu and Cy had braces, because I couldn't tell them apart and I'm doing too much. So, they're both off and as they start exploring more, I can figure out if they need them and then torture them some more.
Maybe everyone will be better off if I just leave them alone!

Hang in there! You are going above and beyond, and in my opinion doing a FANTASTIC job!! Those little guys bounce back so well, it will all be OK.

My previous thought on the start of the molt must be wrong. After dwindling egg numbers, I am up to 7 eggs so far with Darth in the box. 9 eggs would be my max from mature egg layers. Sure would be nice if that little welsummer went in the box too!!

DH and I were talking about coop arrangements and after telling him how close the 9 week olds are to merging with the big flock, he said… well, why don't you just give them all the option of both coops to roost in. Leave both doors open and they can choose. Why didn't I think of that?? It would be foolish to leave the schoolhouse empty all winter. We have yet to do combined free range, maybe Sunday evening.

In the meantime, Reggie has the runs, and mice have taken over my kitchen. Completely overwhelmed by farm life at the moment, so I'm going for a bike ride!
Absolutely supporting your decision!

Well I think I would wait until it was grown and if she is little call her Bantam and if she is regular sized call her LF. Size I have heard is somewhat sex linked ie big moms have bigger babies. I don't remember who told me that and they may be all washed up.

But anyway, YAYAY!!!!! for the new baby hatching its litlle blonde self hope it is fully out soon.

Well I love the pattern of your mutts and you absolutely can use Daphne as a name. I plan to add a Velma as well when I add another Pita Pinta.

We range all of them together from the time the littles are old enough to range. Integration goes super smooth that way and we have had no problems. There is always shuffling and scuffling when I add new birds to the coop but much less when they have gotten to know each other over the free range time. Right now Norma's babies live in the big coop with her. When she is through being their mama I will just let the little girl (Topaz) continue to live in there and move the boys into the juvie/baby pen. She probably will be picked on a bit at bed time but other than that it will be fine. I have to move my Marans girls into the big pen soon but they each other and they have been ranging with the big girls for weeks now. They won't like it b/c they will be away from "home" but they will settle in pretty quickly.

That makes me feel much better. The main reason they were separated was because someone attacked one of them when they were a week old. No doubt it was one of the rowdy cockerels that no longer live in my pine tree. Willie Roo is so sweet to them and the young pullets as well!! I can't believe I ever thought of replacing him (remind me of this when I turn my back to him in a few days and get flogged without my high boots on). The last integration went well, and I suppose they were about the same age. I think I am mostly worried about hawks as we are entering their migration season and these guys are about perfect size for a meal. I kind of adore MJ too, and feel like if I can just keep her locked up and safe…. ah. what kind of life is that though when she really wants out? They all have interacted through fence. I'll set a day, Sunday, a few hours before bed time, and just let them all out. I can do it!!

Pancake is so pretty! I love it! Love your little "Maternity ward" set-up!

Good morning Bridge Club

Wow, lots to catch up on!

IC good to see you again; we totally understand how things can get crazy and are just happy to see you when we can.

Oh dear, Bonnie’s timing could have been a little better … Sorry, can’t help you .. I’m a push over when it comes to a wannabe mumma! Having said that, having a hatch at the wrong time is probably not a good thing, especially if you are due for a holiday. I agree with Liz that sometimes we have to not give in due to circumstances.

If Cilla goes full on broody or Blondie decides she is going to go broody, I will have to break them as I just don’t have the accommodation for more than one.

My little baby broody grumbled at me today when I said good morning to her and then puffed up .. so cute! To date, no aggression but then any aggression from Tina would come as a total shock; this is the gal who adopted LuLu, only 3 months younger than her, as her baby!

Tina was stuck fast in the nest this morning when I fed everyone and I sat and watched for a while with my coffee to see if she would come out and have something to eat .. nope! I didn’t step in and gently persuade her to have a leg stretch like I have to with Cilla. I am going to leave her for now and see if she takes a break on her own .. hopefully she is not going to be as ‘silly’ as Cilla and will realise she has to eat and drink, move her legs etc
wink.png

MM good to see you also!

Eeeew, skin is crawling at your description of that spider;
hide.gif
they really are not very nice looking! How anyone can keep them as pets is beyond me!

Lol at Miss Maude getting stuck; poor little thing, I know she probably does not think it was funny but I do
wink.png

Wow, your little ones have grown!

Liz so pleased to read that everyone is doing OK on the farm, especially little Frankie. I am going to check out liquid bandage also; wouldn’t hurt to have some on hand in case of emergencies.

Aaargh, next post, not such good news! Aaaaw Liz, don’t feel bad hon; you are doing all you can to help Little Lu and accidents do happen. You are trying to treat a tiny little, wriggling chick so that it can have a long and wonderful life. OK, a slight mishap but Lu will recover and she is very lucky to have you as her carer .. I have seen some stuff that happens to chickens and other pets that would give anyone nightmares. I know you must be feeling horrible right now, but please do not, she will heal and you are only trying to help.

That bike ride sounds like a great idea; clear the head, enjoy the ride and take one step at a time when you get back. All your little one's will be much better off when their Mum is rested, relaxed and stress free.

Ark I love my cats and consider myself to be a responsible cat owner. Luckily we do not have feral cats around here that I know of; I do know that I would not be a fan of anything that endangered my gals!

TG kewl! I like that we will sort of be hatching together again. Tina’s eggs have not arrived yet, hopefully today so I can give them to her on Sunday. If not, early next week, but I would much prefer to have them today; not happy about them possibly sitting in the postal system all weekend

Love those names!

16 paws Pancake is beautiful!! Love the bubbies!

Lols at “do they count as one or half” .. I believe, with TG’s chicken calculator, they currently do not count at all
wink.png

Okey doke, I had better get this work day over and done with so that I can enjoy my weekend! Without doubt I will be popping in throughout the day to see how everyone is doing; Friday’s are always quiet work-wise

Need some expert help here.
This is Pancakes egg that pipped last night. Actually did not see it pipped only a hole smaller than this in it last night. It doesnt seem to have made much progress from last night. I can see blond feathers but not a beak. It is breathing and chirping. I am concerned because the shell seems cracked not zipped and shouldnt I see a beak? Is it facing the wrong way?
I dont want this one to die like the others and I do not have a bator.
Marie
That black line is my line I drew in the beginning to mark her eggs.
It almost looks like a leg or shoulder showing.

Thanks everyone! Just a really quick check-in to let you know that Lu is indeed healing well. Bleeding stopped quickly, who knows, maybe she'll even grow half a toe.
I have a very busy next few days ahead with non-farm-related things for a change! Good thing seems to be settling down to a new normal.
