I Built A Bridge!

I never lost hope for that girl!!! Yay!!! And a very pretty shade too!! The shape is similar to what my Darth Vader lays and hers are always smaller with super thick shells. She is also a digger. Always digging up something good!

Love all the pics, Teila!

Hello to everyone else. Life is good here on the homestead. Super busy preparing for winter and school functions for the boys. Planting three pear trees this evening and probably stacking more firewood. Nothing much to report, though along with Wendy the Wellie, Elsa the splash cochin and Maude the naughty tree roosting orp are now squatting. It would be nice if they started chipping in… I have promised 6 dozen eggs in two weeks for a family reunion! More brown in the basket would be nice. Egg production is staying around a solid 5-6 per day even though a number of the hens have some obvious molting going on.

Have a great week all!
Haha! I think Jan must have been holding out to hear from her #1 Fan, because she was missing at treat time again today and then left behind a lovely little blue/green/white-speckled 46-gram egg in the nest! Baby steps!

Yay for pear trees and squatting pullets! How are your molting hens laying?? All the adults here are molting right now, including Desi, except Bettina and, I guess, Jan!

Funny she would be waiting on me… perhaps the young ladies in my flock were waiting on her! I just returned from the coop with two brown eggs!! One, same color and shape as Chica's from the outdoor wood crate nest and one long shaped one with dark speckling from the corner nest box. Chica never uses the outdoor box (no one does, for that matter but someone has been in there messing around lately). The one may be from chica, but it is quite small. She is molting though, and maybe laying 3ish times a week. I won't know for certain until I catch them all on the same day I guess.

The molting hens are doing really well, but they are hatchery birds and only a year old. We will see how well they do as they age. The leghorns are egg machines and MIGHT only skip one day a week. I collected 3 blue/green eggs today. One is definitely from Darth Vader. Judging by color and shape, I would say the remaining two came from Sandy and Brownie. No Lucky egg today, but she has really backed off. I think I got one from her last week or the week before that?

Willie shows the most feather loss from the molt, but he is followed by Cleo. Chica and Brownie show some patchy places as well. All the year old girls look a bit… rough. I have been treating them with some BOSS in the morning. It took them a while to decide they were edible! The EE girls wear saddles. They don't seem to have the super strong back feathers and were going bare. I can see the pin feathers coming back in under the saddles, though!

Pics to follow: Patchy Cleo and my afternoon egg haul!

Pretty! The speckled one might be from one of your Welsummers. Their eggs are dark, like the speckled bits, so maybe that's a confused first egg.

Do you have any pictures of MJ when she was a pink-combed pullet? I'm so confused by Frankie.

Liz,
I definitely think that's a Wendy egg too. Others may be squatting, but she is the only one with mega big and red comb and waddles. She's also the most hen-like in sound.
I do, let me dig 'em up!

Thanks, MM!
Her comb is definitely smaller than Frankie's, but it's pinker. Frankie has a totally different kind of comb, though. Plus, I wonder how much Frankie's comb looks bigger because of her bald head!
I didn't realize MJ was an EE - her pea comb is a little smaller than Norma's, but I'm still pretty confident that Norma is a pullet, compared to Brian. Of course, pair-comparisons are risky, since they could just be different-looking boys!

Ah yes, MJ is my super special EE. My biggest worry would be those wattles. She's what… 5ish weeks old now? Here are some pics of one of the white leghorns. Their combs and wattles grow like crazy. This one ended up being a pullet. Again, my main concern was the height of her comb as well as some aggressiveness. 6-1/2 weeks here.

Now here is a pullet and cockerel from MJ's hatch, again leghorn mixes so their combs and wattles grow super big, though they inherited a cushion comb from the rose/single combo.7 weeks on these guys.

I just realized the wattles coming in on this girl. I do think mixes grow faster than purebreds. Holding out hope for Frankie!! Has Jan visited the nest box today yet?

OK, that's a bigger comb than Frankie's! But, she has a week on Frankie and it's a bit more yellow. Looking at Frankie's comb and wattles just now, they're inescapably big and pink. But, they're still smaller and lighter than the known/suspected boys (well, maybe not smaller than Brian's, but his is a pea comb and it's bright red). I will try to be patient.
And, I am also being patient with Jan! Two visits to the nest in a row would be a lot to hope for so soon after her year off, don't you think?!

Front door, couldnt forget the rooster at the door even for Halloween.

Now I need to do the fireplace. Work has been super busy and I have to make 1200 Christmas arrangements for our store and help make some for other stores in our district! Dont know how I am going to do it but oh well, I dont have a choice! Work is tough sometimes right?

Glad everyone has been cruising along nicely....

I am going to take some pictures of Hope. She is crazy looking....
