Too funny! Yeah, it's looking promising, but seems a bit early to tell. Funny, I thought these pictures were in black and white, until you mentioned wanting color help! I have no idea, but they're both gorgeous colors! I'm very jealous that Rousseau's two chicks are most definitely unfrizzled.I need you help on 'Spot'. Still pretty sure 'Spot' is a Frizzle but the next few days will tell. It is the colour I am more fascinated by! I have no idea what to call it ... it's like a silver! I know it is early days but interested to know your thoughts???
The little sweetheart knew I was trying to get a good photo of the wing and was very obliging!! lol

Stella laid a second egg so far she is not broody hahahaQuick visit .... beautiful day outside!!
Blondie's new extension so she can have a stretch without Dusty picking on her. It's not pretty but it will do the trick!:
'Gloria' is feathering out nicely:
My little dinosaur!!

Just expecting eggs here! Lol!
Speaking of expecting... My little sister just went public with her news of expecting a bubbie of the two legged non feathered variety! I'm gonna be an Aunt!! (again!)
Cute!!! Hoping your egg basket will be over flowing in a few months and that you get some blue eggs. Bonnie's comb is super coolThanks! Yes, Bonnie has a crest which is soft and looks like brown hair, and that comb can pass for a red bow on top of her head.I think she's adorable too. She came from a Red Star egg, and dad was a roo that we sorta borrowed from a friend (when we first decided we wanted chickens, we definitely wanted a roo with them, but we got chicks too, so a friend who has chickens roaming free all over his enormous farm said we could take one of his and give him back if one of the chicks grew up to be a boy) - so I don't really know what breed her dad is, but based on body shape and legs - short and stocky - there's definitely Dorking blood. I am also assuming he is the one who passed on the broodiness gene, as all his daughters are super broody.![]()
Congratulations on Stella egg!!! Those first eggs are so precious. And yeah... silkie crosses... I had one go broody after laying her first 6 eggs last year. I'm hoping Stella waits a bit longer, but realize that there is a very good chance she won't.
I'm with you on the egg basket thing, and waiting for next year, as my oldest girls are from May 30th hatch... can't wait for spring! (although still hoping that someone will surprise me and lay in autumn/winter)
Poor Cosmo... but yeah, I can see how that would be the only solution. Those teenage boys are hard to deal with.
Lol on the mama mob mentality! Hopefully they'll calm down pretty soon.
Oh, and while I was spying on Bonnie last night before bedtime through the fence, one of the teenage silkie crosses decided that my shoulder made a far better roost than anything they had in the coop, so I must share this felfie (I'm pretty sure that qualifies as one) with you as well.![]()

Great pics Liz. Pulling extra hard for Frankie to be a pullet!Too funny! Yeah, it's looking promising, but seems a bit early to tell. We're in our annual early-October heatwave here. It was in the 90's most of the day, which is fun for about one day. The chickens were a bit in shock, but managed. Lucy might not be minding her molt too much under the circumstances.
Here's my little naked-neck marans:
A few of you have asked about ages recently. Jan is probably almost 3 - she was 2 when I got her in January, and her people wouldn't answer how far she was into being 2. The popular kids will be 6 weeks this weekend, and Cy will be 6 weeks on Wednesday. I'm pretty-well convinced that there are 4 popular pullets and 2 popular cockerels. I think the marans are probably both boys (Cy is for sure) and Frankie continues to look like a pullet with an extra-large comb and wattles and male pattern baldness. S/he will probably keep me guessing for awhile.
Nice Felfie, IC! Cindy hopped on my shoulder when she was about 3.5 weeks, but the pics I took were way too unflattering to post!
OK, bed time. Have a great weekend everyone! Stay cool, my California peeps!
Haha, Marie! For once, it's almost as hot here in Oakland! It's been in the mid-90's in the coop all afternoon, so the chickens were all in the back yard, trying to stay cool. I finally braved the heat enough to check the nest box and found Bettina's egg sitting in a yolky pool from Jan's broken egg! So sad! Every egg is precious these days. Has anyone in hot country ever had an egg burst from the heat before? There's only ever been one other broken egg in the nest, and that was during the first broody hatch, when everyone was hiding there because of a scary dog on the loose. I doubt Bettina just stepped on it, but everyone was definitely looking out of sorts today. Its really hot here today, upper 90"s. Cant wait to get a little fall weather so the chickens can cool off a bit.

I hope you and the cyclists survived the heat, @tommysgirl . I like challenging rides and my cousin was a national-champion cyclist, but I've never been interested in racing. I don't like riding in groups, and I'm scared my competitiveness will lead me to do something stupid. I've actually had a string of unfortunate events on my rides lately, so I'm feeling even less motivated than usual.
Thanks, Teila! Honestly, my chickens are not all close, much of the time. Everyone picks on Lucy, and she picks on whomever she can, and Desi can be a jerk to the girls and the chicks if he's feeling ornery, and of course there are the broodzillas. But, I am so impressed with Auntie Marsha!! I had thought she might be a problem, since she was so interested in flock domination when she arrived. Who knew she was actually a wanna-broody? Today she was hanging out with Rousseau's clan like a second broody mama (mirroring Grace in her observation-post position while Frida napped with the chicks), and just now, I went to close the door to the run, and heard Alice the chick chirping plaintively, having been knocked off the roost (I think by Lucy), and Marsha came down from the far roost to encourage Alice back on up! It was so sweet!!Liz I love how close all your girls are and your stories of Auntie Marsha; such a sweetheart.
I am a wimp on a bike! I am intimidated by traffic and hills. There are two long bike rides I have enjoyed in my life both flat and on bike/pedestrian paths. This isn't a race. It is a ride and there were people dropping like flies in the heat. Lots of Team in Training folks who were inspirational and lots of 55+ older riders. We had a breeze, easy ups and tall pines and oaks so enough shade to keep us fairly comfortable. As long as there is some sort of breeze I like the heat.I hope you and the cyclists survived the heat, @tommysgirl .
