I Built A Bridge!

Hi Liz,

Thats odd about Bettina. How old is she? I really havent had a chicken act like that so I am at a loss as to what it may be. Have you tried polyvisol vitamins? I heard they can help chickens that seem under the weather. Wish I had more to offer. Give her a hug for me.

Liz thank you. I did get a nice variety of colours.

Like 16 paws I was wondering how old Bettina was also? Definitely looking forward to the picture of Rousseau in her new outfit!

16 paws lovely to see you again.

The Nuggets are from a mixed bantam pen which apparently had some Frizzles, Silkies and other breeds. Three of the Nuggets have 5 toes.

If you are looking for our help regards “no more chickens” you definitely came to the wrong place

[Hang on .. Scroll back! Eggs? Don’t you have chickens?]

Well, yes, funnily enough I do but I do believe you are confusing my chickens with chickens of the egg laying variety. My chickens are actually chickens of the molting or broody variety!

Up until yesterday, I did have one chicken of the egg laying variety but she has decamped over to the dark side and is now broody also.

Bambrook Bantams is now officially a no egg zone. We do however, have one featherless chicken; one semi broody/semi molting chicken with invisible babies; one full on broody chicken with invisible babies and a mumma chicken with real babies.

The best chance Bambrooks Bantams has of seeing any eggs is if one of the Nuggets is a girl!

Bless her little frizzled feathers, LuLu has decided that this motherhood thing looks like fun!

I found her yesterday in the nest box sitting on an egg she laid (going to hang onto that one as long as I can so I don’t forget what eggs look like). I told her it was free range time and popped her in the garden. She spent the next 20 minutes toc-tocing around the garden, showing her invisible babies all the good spots and protecting them from Turtle Doves before retiring back to the nest box.

I don’t think so sweetheart .. dream on .. not a chance!

I tried to take an individual picture of all the Nuggets yesterday evening but did not succeed. One, because they would not stand still and two, because the batteries in the camera went flat (what a surprise! lol).

9 Days Old.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a Frizzle! All we need now is for said Frizzle to be a girl. Not the best picture but taken to show off those Frizzle feathers:

These two have me intrigued …. I thought they were feathering in white but now they have a darker colour in the mix as well; not sure how they are going to turn out. I can tell them apart by the wing feather; one has longer feathers at the moment.

This one just because I thought it was cute! Might have to nickname this one Seagull:

Teila,
Love looking at your pictures of the little nuggets! Your frizzle reminds me so much of Hope my frizzle. I will take a picture of HIM

. Yes my little Hope, the one I delivered out of the shell, turned out to be a ROOSTER! Dag nab it! Get this, Antie Emm, the Brabanter that was saved from all the ants in the shell turned out to be a ROOSTER also!
he.gif
All that work saving them and they were both ROOSTERS! I had about 8 boys so I had to re home a couple. Still have like 5 or so and will have to let go of a couple more but I get attached to them. None of them fight so I have been slow to re home the little guys. Oh well, thats the hard part, letting go.

Too funny about your shopping list...those darn broody girls need to get back to laying! Dont they know that food is expensive? I hope you dont have to wait till the littles are old enough to lay to get some eggs. Isnt it winter there right now? Dont they know they cant raise babies till spring?

Happy chickening all....

I had a wonderful day in the garden with the bubs (sorry about all the pics, these are only a sample of all the pics I took! Lol)

"I had a big day!"

"I had a big day too. I am a very tired little Frizzle!"

No need to be sorry Teila, I never get tired of looking at the babies. They all look so happy. Looks like they are growing fast. Have you got names yet?

Thanks for offering up the name Hooper for Hope. I kind of like that. We shall see if it sticks.

Well I had to do it...

I heard that the feed store was getting in Cuckoo Marans and guess who was there picking some up for her frizzle bantam broody Taffy?

You guessed it, ME, the one that needs help but cant get any!

I was worried that she wouldnt go for it since she has only been broody for a week maybe. They are getting along fantastic. Six marans and one brabantar. I hope she can keep them all warm because she is such a tiny little thing but wow is she a great mama.
I picked up the nest box she was in and placed it inside a dog kennel with chicken wire part way up the sides. Those little buggers have escaped several times. I walk into the coop and there they are just hanging out with the big chickens! The babies look up at me like whats your problem lady"? As I stand there horrified that one of the big guys would hurt them. No way, the big guys just walk by them like they have known them all their lives. Too funny.

Sorry about the picture but the sun was shining in that spot.
Have a great weekend all!

Good morning folks

16 paws I have names picked for two gals but I am not using them yet until I know who is a girl and who is staying and there lies my dilemma …..

With our block size, Council allows 6 chickens. I have 4 adults and was going to keep 2 of this hatch if they are girls.

It is only early days, but I have my suspicions that the black is a boy.

If the Frizzle is a girl, she will definitely be staying.

The photos of the ‘little pale brown with black markings’ is the same little one and if a girl I am hoping to keep it.

My dilemma is that if one of the 2 ‘whites’ (not that they are white, don’t really know what colour to call them) is also a girl, I want to keep one of those.

I sat there yesterday watching them and trying to decide which I would pick between the brown and the white if they are girls and I want both!

So I am working on Joel to let me keep 3 if they are girls! Anyways, will have to wait a while yet until we know gender.

I didn’t get to keep ‘Spot’ or ‘George’ from the last hatch so if these little one’s all turn out to be boys, I will be very peeved!!

Next weekend, Easter, we are doing some renovations and the temporary run extension is going to become an additional, permanent, covered run.

Taffy is adorable! Of course I would say that because her and LuLu look like twins

The set-up you have for her and the bubs is fantastic. I had the same problem with my little ones, just walked straight between the wire and into the garden so I had to put a skirt around the bottom of their run extension also.

Off to buy more chick start; these little ones are greedy little tykes!

Teila, I agree, my littles are eating so much. We may have to take out a second morgage to feed all these guys. Lol

I have to go along with your thinking about working on Joel to keep both if you can. But in my sick little head, the more the better!

Thanks for the compliment on Taffy, she really is special and I know Lulu is as well.

Have a beautiful weekend all!
