I was really surprised I did not have trouble with mine . We had bought 6 hens . 3 already laying and 3 not . then we had 30 baby chicks ( now are teens ) actually they are about ready to lay also , and been buying more ever since . DH came home with 8 more hens Thursday night from an auction .
the 6 hens were in cages (3 in each cage ) and were laying in a milk crate in that cage .
SO , once the coop and run were completed , we took " THEIR CRATE " and put it 1ST. in line , then added 7 more , side by side . and I guess since they all the same color and golfballs inside , they decided this is it ....
NOW , I have several others laying and they are all learning from each other . " follow the leader "
You're welcome!
You can block off that area simply by finding something to "occupy" that space very temporarily like an overturned pot or basket, etc; anything to break up their routine.
Good luck!
Awesome job Gumpsgirl, girl's rock. I personally take a different approach to the honeydew list. I have to wait for the right timeing. My old man work's overtime each week to pay my feed bill so I have to make sure he is good and rested. Then I don't say a word about my plan's for the day. I go outside and get my lumber and tools out and start what ever project it is I have going on. It want be 10 minutes or so and there he is wanting to know what I'm doing. It want be another 10 minutes and he is totally taken over the job. I don't know if he is afraid of me using the power tool's or maybe he just does't want me playing with his tool's. Whatever the reason this get's the job done. lol Hey and don't feel like a cheap skate. I advertise in the free paper for free lumber. That's the best kind don't you think??

Talent really had nothing to do with it! Honestly! I've helped my DH build my coops and have done a lot of watching and learning. I too was completely scared of the power tools (mortified as stated before!), but decided I needed to get over that. I started cutting a few pieces of wood for the kids treehouse we are building the last few days with my DH standing by my side and decided that it really wasn't to bad. I just needed to make sure that I kept my body parts out of the way!
chilling in muscadine - Thank you! I was happy when I accomplished the task and I absolutely think that free lumber is the best kind! Hey! My DD's coop is built completely out of free lumber. I will be posting pics of that soon. All we had to buy for it was the chicken wire and screws. Those things together were $90. Not to bad for a coop!
steffpeck - You'll have to try it out! It really isn't so bad. You do need to be careful though.
