For me, it's all about the eggs - especially with a two-chicken limit. I would get two hens - around 16 - 18 weeks old - one Easter Egger (for those pretty eggs) and one nice brown egg layer. If you're not in a hurry for eggs, you could get chicks. Good luck!

Welcome! I'm new at chicken keeping too
I went with Red sex link females they will be 6 weeks old saturday I've
had them for two weeks, its a lot of fun watching them grow and lose their
baby feathers plus getting to know them has been really neat at 1st they were
afraid of me then after the 1st week they started feeling comfortable and coming out
when I go to the coop and call them" here chickie chickie" they know my voice and are starting
to let me get close even taking food from my hand lol I gave them water melon and a corn on the cob as a treat
and now we are best friends. I can't wait to let them out in the mornings
I think hens are the way to go and the sex links aka cinnamon queens are very nice calm and sweet.
I'm also really glad I went with young chicks instead of older hens.

2 Hens more eggs and not somuch noise..... Chooses a breed that has a high egg production so you can get the most out of them I went with a variety LegHorns Black and gold sexlis Arucannas (sp?) and the white leghorns are laying alot more eggs but you loose the colorfulness and beauty of the other breeds. i would get chicks if you want them as pets as well. with only 2, you could REALLY bond with them, spoil them, handle them a lot etc, and they would be very tame! my favorites for pet quality would be Buff Orps, Easter Eggers, Barred Rock...and those breeds lay really well too. and that's only in MY experience, i'm sure there's loads of breeds out there that are very friendly. i have one Silver Cuckoo Marans who is absolutely SO sweet! her name is Cricket and she just LOVES to sit on my lap and nuzzle her head in my hair! so sweet of a girl! but she lays a medium egg.

If given a minimal number that I can have I would go with hens only for the eggs. I would also get chicks or pullets to start with.
