It's day 7 for me so I candled a few eggs that I have. I saw some that had dots all over, I'm assuming those are probably bad. The other few that I looked at were dark the top third of the egg. What does that mean??? That's all I could really see, they are colored eggs.

There is a thread on here under this same topic, and it has pics of eggs being candled. They are some really good pics too. i'd look at them first before tossing in the towel!

I like to wait until day 15 to candle. Sometimes it's really hard to see anything growing at day 7. That's just my personal opinion.

I have no idea. I can't find any candling pics with so much dark area.

Well, as long as none of the eggs are starting to smell, I would give them some more time in the bator before you decide to toss any. Recheck them again in a few days. What kind of eggs are you incubating? On some of my Maran eggs, I was almost positive that nothing was developing. Guess what? Every single one of those hatched! I also had one extremely dark olive egg, couldn't see a danged thing in there! At lockdown, I thought maybe, just maybe I saw something. That one hatched, too!

They are maran and olive eggs. So are dark areas bad? It's like I can only see the light the bottom third, and the rest is dark.

On some of the Maran and olive eggs, the only thing I could positively identify was the air cell. So if the egg doesn't smell bad and is not sweating just leave it in the bator and play the wait and see game:) I found it very difficult to be so patient and thought that I was going to have a poor hatch (cuz I couldn't see anything), but I had 10 out of 11 hatch (the 11th never pipped, checked it on Day 23 and it had died fully formed). In my case, any part of the egg that wasn't the air cell was totally dark. So, I would just leave them in and wait:) While that batch was in the bator, I looked up everything I could on candling Maran eggs/dark olive eggs. Finally just gave up and let mother nature run its course. So, once again, no smell, no sweating, leave it in! Some people have apparently made some awesome candlers that you can use on Maran eggs, but it wasn't worth the effort or expense for me. I just decided to be patient:)

How powerful is your flashlight? Marans and Olives are almost impossible to candle. We picked up a 100+ lumens flashlight from home depot (http://www.ledlenserusa.com/product_info.php?modelNum=7736D) for around 20$ which is SO WORTH IT if you are going to work with dark egg shells. * In a semi-dark room I can see through my own hand with it, bones, veins, everything.

I just candled my silky eggs this morning and was pleased to see the veining. I had tried a few days earlier and didn't see anything, which had me wondering if I was going to have any success. Still have a ways to go...so keeping fingers crossed and wishing for the best. but it's always nice to be able to SEE progress.

I had issues the first few days with my temperature being just a LITTLE low...so that could have slowed down the process a little. So don't give up yet...give it a few more days or so, and you should be able to see progress.

Best of Luck to you!!!
