That's the WORST.... I sometimes like to make the comparison to their dog or cat, and ask how they'd feel if I referred to their pet in such a way. They still usually don't get it and think I'm just being overly sensitive about a "stupid chicken". Smh.

I actually did that to someone the other day who told me the only good bird is one on a plate. I referenced the Mexican restaurant I used to like which got shut down for being found using stray cats for some of their meat. Bet you didn't know cat burritos are delicious. :D

The appropriate use for any given animal is in the eye of the beholder I guess, consumption of many species commonly viewed as "pets" here in the States is quite common in many cultures. Dog, cat, Guinea pig, horse and many other species viewed as non food animals by some here in the States are regularly found on the dinner plates in other locales. While I do understand that your chickens are pets to you, you can't escape the fact that generally speaking poultry is viewed as a food source. That being said those around you should be able to respect the fact that for you chickens in your flock our pets not food
