I can't believe how many chickens you guys have

I have a family of 3 and 19 laying hens. They lay on average of a dozen a day. I have gotten use to incorporating eggs into our meals. I sell 6 doz or so to 2 regular customers and I also give them away. Like if my child spends the night at Grandmas or his friends house, he comes with eggs!! My DH takes hard boiled eggs to work in his lunch, they love pickled and deviled eggs as well. There are times when we have 10 dozen in the fridge, 2 days later we waiting for the girls to lay so we can have breakfast!

I must be the minority. I have a family of 5... two of them are teen's... I have 5 hens that are all laying. I get about 28 eggs a week! I am actually considering giving two of them away! I am hoping if I do, than I will have less mess and less noise. I had no idea these little buggers would be so loud!

I have 10 layers, 5 chickens, 5 ducks and could have 20 more and still not meet the demand for eggs. Once people get to taste a real free range egg they NEVER want to go back to store bought, even for baking.

Well.

So everyone (except one) is saying that it's the chicken who comes first not the egg!
This will be interesting. I am getting chickens for the eggs. My goal is to be a self sustaining as possible, and to teach my children that food doesn't come from the store.
But I originally planned on 6 hens, and added two a week later.
I hope I can hold the line at 8.
The time required for maintenance on 100 chickens must be huge ??

I do really like the idea of giving eggs to the local food bank. I am putting in double the amount of vegetables we can eat so that I can donate the rest to the bank.

It doesn't matter, tending chickens is a delightfully messy, tranquil way to pass time.

(I have a bridge for sale, if you're interested.......)
