I can't believe I'm posting here....

That's exactly what I was thinking. You're jumping to conclusions. Get all the information first, and definitely deal with the boy's parents, not the boy.

I'm very sorry for your loss. That was very horrible whatever the boy was doing with the chicken.

Maybe, (just maybe), he found it dead on the street and decided to take it for science class at school....

But, the most important thing to do is to get your facts straight, and then take the case further.

Good luck. Keep us informed.

Oh yes indeed . BROAD DAYLIGHT !!!!! we had several neighborhood teens stealing our chickens . Fortunately , the neigh in the bak seen who they were and brought me to their home and I informed the parents of what was witness'ed . Naturally , parents said their kids were not in my yard . WRONG !!!!! They had my chickens locked up in a cage in their back yard . Mother said a lil frined had given her boys the chickens ... WRONG !!!! when police were called the oldest admitted to stealing the chickens and he was arrested . We go to court for restitution of damages Jan. 7th. 2009 at 8:30 AM ..

We ended up totally enclosing our runs and coops and adding electric fence around total perimeter of it all ...

Hey!! That's my neighbor's court date too! His dogs killed 13 of my birds. We'll both be fighting the good fight at the same time.

It's not "just a chicken"; make that "It's just MY chicken". I dont care what was stolen, it's thievery, no if's, and's or but's. Could be he found it dead, could be he killed it trying to catch it, who knows? However, if he really did take it from the yard, I dont care if it's a paper clip, it's stealing. I'd never lie for my kids, never did, never would. That is why no one thinks anyone should pay for the consequences of their actions anymore-if parents lie for the kid, they're teaching it that they can get away with anything. Ok, off my soapbox now. Hope you find out what actually happened, but when kids are involved, sometimes you never do.

OK it is just YOUR chicken,,..

My point was to not let the kid go scott free.. My point was to contact the parents and keep the police and government out of it..

there is way too much of that already in this country..

this is the type of punishmen best handled behind the wood shed by the parents..

If you cannot get the parents to do anything about it, THEN go to the police..

BTW I cannot believe that you have not contacted the parents yet..

Absolutely, contact the parents, I agree. That would be done first, just like I always did when I had an issue with a n'hood kid. Depends on the people who live in your n'hood. Sometimes, when you meet the parents, you see why kids are so messed up and amoral. More often than not, the answer is "not my kid, he wouldn't do that"... "Jimmy, did you take this person's chicken?"...."no, I didn't".... " See? Not my kid; must have been some other kid.". Believe me, I've had plenty of parent conversations. My sons are in their 30's now.
